The Goochland Bulldogs took their first step on a championship repeat run last week with a 34-28 victory over a stubborn Clarke County team in a Region B, Division 2 semi-final playoff game. The Eagles, led by all region quarterback Chandler Rhodes, entered the game with a plan— to control the ball and keep it out of the hands of D.J. Coles. Taking the opening kickoff, the visitors looked like they might accomplish their objective, stringing together a 19-play drive that resulted in a touchdown. The drive took up more than nine minutes and consumed much of the first quarter.… Read more...

J.V. Bulldogs on brink of district title
When the 2007 season began, Goochland’s Junior Varsity football team had two goals. The first was avenging a heartbreaking loss to Buckingham last year. The second — to win the James River District. This week, the JV Bulldogs can accomplish both feats in one fell swoop, as 7-1 Goochland hosts Buckingham Wednesday. “We said at the beginning of the season we wanted to beat Buckingham and win it all and we can do both with one shot next week,” Goochland Coach Patrick Gordon said following the Bulldogs’ thumping of visiting Cumberland last week. The… Read more...

Goochland’s offensive canon launched three running backs for more than 100 yards each in a 42-8 shock-and-awe ground assault of visiting Randolph Henry Friday night. The fireworks started early, as Goochland’s offensive ground game exploded for almost 450 yards in a lopsided James River District victory. On Goochland’s first possession, D.J. Football: Bulldogs still battling Gretna for lead in AP poll, VHSL ratings
With the top teams in the state and Region B continuing to win, that means this week’s batch of rankings look an awful lot like last week’s. Goochland remains in the No. 2 spot in the Associated Press Group A poll, ranked only behind Gretna, which swept the 11 first-place votes. As it happens, the Bulldogs are also second to the Hawks in the Division 2 power rankings conducted by the Virginia High School League. Gretna has a 24.333 rating, while Goochland has a 22.8. Volleyball: Unlikely loss leads to unlikely benefits for Goochland
Nobody saw it coming. Not the fans, not the coach, not the players. Nobody. The Goochland girls volleyball team was cruising to another easy James River District win against Central on Oct. 2. Nobody on the Bulldogs had tasted defeat to a district opponent in the regular season (it last happened when this year’s seniors were in the eighth grade), and it didn’t look like it was going to happen this day. Goochland won the first two games by wide margins (25-9, 25-12) and coach Bert Stanley was making substitutions to get his bench players some more playing time. But volleyball… Read more...
