Tournament provides first win for Bulldogs
Goochland head basketball coach Oliver Courtney was looking for improvement as his team entered the 11th Annual E. Dale Travis Invitational Basketball Tournament at Trinity High School this past weekend. In that aspect the team exceeded expectations, earning their first victory of the young season and securing a spot in the tournament’s championship game. Courtney said the Bulldogs’ efforts in the opener against Bishop Sullivan indicates the squad is headed in the right direction. “They really played hard and did some things well,” he said. “They’re… Read more...

Spartans spear Lady Bulldogs shot at win
Goochland’s Lady Bulldogs had a tough couple of match-ups last week as they participated in the 11th Annual E. Dale Travis Invitational Tournament at Trinity Episcopal School. On Thursday, the young Bulldog team suffered a 29-54 loss against Hampton Roads Academy. “It was going our way in the first half,” said Goochland head coach Sarah Nicholson. “We had every opportunity to win.” Nicholson’s girls went on to face the Steward School Spartans in Saturday’s consolidation round. … Read more...

Bulldogs take dive into new swimming season
Goochland’s 2008-09 swim team is hoping a talented mix of seniors and under classmen will carry the squad to the next level as they dive into their upcoming schedule. Coach Dardi Ritchie said she is pleased with what she has seen so far, and her squad is maturing. “We have more swimmers this year who swim year round and that makes a huge difference,” she said. “I am really excited about this year, and especially the guys team,” Ritchie added. One of those year round swimmers is Joe Stratton. “I am expecting a lot out of junior… Read more...

Threes, trees and turnovers do in Bulldogs 53-49
Goochland head basketball coach Oliver Courtney felt his team would have to play error free in order to negate the tall trees on the James River roster in their season opener. What he did not expect was a three-point barrage from the Rapids and a slew of turnovers from his team. Host James River used their full court press early and timely three point shots throughout to defeat the Bulldogs 53-49. Early on the Bulldogs could not deal with the Rapids’ full court press. Goochland committed several turnovers in the game, which put them down in the first… Read more...

Bulldogs prepare for farewell tour of JRD
The Goochland Bulldogs enter the 2008-09-basketball season with a healthy dose of uncertainty. Even with the advantage of four returning starters, the team is facing some stiff challenges in the James River District as they begin their farewell tour of the conference. Veteran coach Oliver Courtney said he has reasonable expectations for this year’s squad, but is not sure where they fit in the JRD mix. “We have a team that could finish anywhere from first to third,” he said. “The team has talent, but they face a tough schedule with some… Read more...

Short-handed Lady-Bulldogs look to adapt
With a new head coach and more fresh faces than familiar ones, Bulldog fans may notice a few changes on the girls’ basketball court this year. Last week, the new varsity team held its first scrimmage of the season and got to know the game and each other. Sarah Nicholson is the coach of this year’s Lady Bulldogs, and though this is her first year with varsity, she is neither new to the court nor to Goochland. Nicholson is well into her third year at Goochland High School as a business and marketing teacher. Fans will… Read more...

Ex-Goochland player joins Mount St. Mary’s
Sometimes unexpected setbacks lead to better outcomes in the end. Such could be said for former Goochland High School basketball player Malcolm Parham. After graduating from GHS in 2006, the Bulldogs’ team captain had his sites set on playing Division I basketball. Though he had been accepted to play at Division III UVA-Wise, Parham turned down the offer of being a Cav to take a chance at walking on at Virginia Commonwealth. However, after enrolling at VCU Parham’s fate took a turn for the worse when then head coach Jeff Capel left the school to take the head… Read more...

Hawks disrupt Goochland’s solid game plan
Coach Joe Fowler knew his team would need an edge to defeat Gretna on its own turf at playoff time. Last year’s state champion Hawks seemed poised and ready to reclaim the title with the Bulldogs representing their first obstacle in that quest. When heavy rain and fog were forecast, Fowler thought he might get the tiny break he needed. “We were hoping for a downpour,” Fowler said. “We felt it would play to our advantage. The only way you can neutralize speed is with speed and we didn’t have it and we were hoping the weather might be able to… Read more...

Pitino’s lessons are timely and pertinent to all
When it comes to well-timed releases of publications, no book could have hit the shelves in a more timely fashion than Rick Pitino’s “Rebound Rules: The Art of Success 2.0” (219 pgs. Harper-Collins, $29.95). With the crisis in the U.S. economy, housing markets, global turmoil and unrest on a personal level, no time could be better than now to get good advice on how to bounce back. While Pitino, who is currently the head basketball coach for the University of Louisville, is known for hoops, the book, co-written with ESPN’s Pat Forde, is not as much about… Read more...
