After two early season losses, the Benedictine Cadets are on a four-game win streak and seem to improve with each contest.

Taking on visiting Patrick Henry at Coach Rutt Court last weekend, Benedictine got off to an early start and never looked back.

Led by an explosive 34-point performance by the Cadets’ VCU bound Jordan Burgess, Benedictine coasted to an 87-55 win over the Patriots.

Character of team made the season memorable

SALEM—When Coach Joe Fowler gathered his team together following the Bulldogs 21-16 loss to Gretna in the Division 2 state championship he had little to say about football. Instead Fowler spoke about life lessons and personal character.

Character more than any other trait, was what the Goochland football team displayed best this season.

While many football players would become cocky and antagonistic sporting a 14-0 record, the Bulldogs remained complimentary and courteous when it came to their opponents.

The Bulldogs, dealt their first loss of the season, finished 14-1. Gretna is 13-2.

Bulldogs chasing title No.2

In the summer, Jess McLaughlin works with his father, Johnny, a stone mason. Jess hauls bricks, stones and cinder blocks, and he makes mortar by mixing cement with sand and water. When he doesn’t have a mixer, he dumps it all in a wheelbarrow and mixes it up by hand.

“It’s a great workout,” Jess said. “It works all the small muscles in your hands and your arms.”

The Goochland linebacker is the only player his team sends to midfield for the pregame coin toss. While most teams send three captains, coach Joe Fowler doesn’t feel the need to… Read more...

Gretna relies on defense

GRETNA—In its preparations for the season, Gretna heard and read on the message boards how it was supposed to be a down year for a program fresh off a state championship game appearance.

One of the areas the Hawks needed to address to make another run for a state championship was on the defensive side, where most of the playmakers graduated.
“As the year has gone on, we kept getting better and better on defense. We’ve really gotten better on offense too, but I just thought the defense was going to be behind because they weren’t as good,” Gretna coach… Read more...
