Goochland kicker Colby Cooke named All-American
Cooke, 6-foot-3, 190 pounds, hit 17 field goals this season, which ties Shane Graham for second most in VHSL history. His longest was 51 yards, which came in the Division 2 state title game, which the Bulldogs lost 21-16 to Gretna. Cooke received a full ride to Vanderbilt. He intends to grayshirt, meaning he won’t enroll until January of 2013. Cooke was the only kicker selected to the 53-member All-American team. Three Virginians made it, including Alex Carter, a 6-1, 190-pound defensive back from Briar Woods, and Trey Edmunds, a 6-2, 205-pound running back from Dan River. … Read more...

Powhatan defeats Bulldogs in second matchup
For the second time in seven days, Goochland and Powhatan squared off on the basketball court and the result was a split. Monday night, it was Goochland’s turn to host but Powhatan’s turn to win as the Indians left town with a 70-57 victory. The Bulldogs snatched an early lead but once the Indians drew even at six they never looked back. Powhatan’s aggressive play on the boards and young undersized backcourt shredded the usually stingy Bulldog defense to lead by as much as 19 points. “That was probably the best game we’ve played… Read more...

Benedictine picks up second half pace with Burgess
Benedictine senior Jordan Burgess made it look easy as he piled up 39 points against Amelia Academy last week in a 71-47 victory for the #6 Cadets. The game high performance was just five points off the school record, but those who know Burgess will tell you personal records don’t matter much to the unselfish VCU commit. “Jordan Burgess is a warrior.” said Cadet coach Sean McAloon. “I would take 12 of him any day of the week, not only because he’s talented, but because he approaches the game the right way.” According to McAloon,… Read more...

Major changes could be on the way via VHSL reclassification
An ad hoc committee formed by the VHSL is recommending sweeping changes to the way state schools are classified. “This time in the league’s history is an ideal opportunity to consider fresh, nontraditional ideas,” according to the committee meeting’s minutes. The committee supports doubling the current three classifications to six. The smallest class (1A) would consist of schools of 475 or fewer students (currently 55 schools). The rest would be divided into equal fifths of about 52 schools. That means all Central Region schools, which currently play in Group AAA,… Read more...

Bulldog basketball enters new year on a roll
On Friday night the Goochland varsity boys basketball team capped off a successful week with a 75-59 home victory over Central Luneburg. In doing so, the team provided first year coach Preston Gordon with his first victory in the GHS gym. “It was special,” Gordon said. Central quickly fell behind as the Bulldogs mounted a six-point lead in a fast paced first period. Despite a pressing Bulldog defense that forced Central into turnovers, the Chargers tied the score at 25 midway through the second period. The visitors then kept it close with the… Read more...

Benedictine competes among state’s best at Hawk Duals
Hanover invited some of the top teams in the state to its Hawks Duals wrestling tournament last Friday. Benedictine was among 16 teams, representing all four VHSL Group AAA regions, one Group AA team, one Group A team, and one private school came to Mechanicville to grapple with the question, “Who’s best?” The host Hawks found out they were one of the best, but in the end lost to Ocean Lakes High School of Virginia Beach in the tournament title match. Benedictine finished in 10th place after falling to Hermitage in the final consolation match. … Read more...

Benedictine loses lead, then game
There he stood, calmly and confidently amidst the din of the crowd and row upon row of arm-waving distractions strategically situated just behind the basket and well within his line of vision. All B.J. Andrews had to do with 1.7 seconds remaining in overtime Thursday night was knock down two foul shots, and the McDonough Eagles would secure a hard-earned, come-from-behind victory over host Benedictine in the championship game of the Capital City Classic. “I live for that type of situation,” said the 6foot-3 junior guard, whose floor leadership, 21 points and 4-for-4… Read more...

Cadets’ win leaves them unsatisfied
The Benedictine locker room was silent. The Cadets changed out of their jerseys and shorts and packed their bags in a solemn mood. They had just defeated St. Albans 61- 52 in the first round of the Benedictine Capital City Classic. But by the look of the team, one would never have known. The No. 6 Cadets struggled to score in the second half, lost the lead they had held most of the game and were “out-toughed” by St. Albans, Benedictine coach Sean McAloon said. “A win is a win,” Cadets senior Jordan Burgess said. “Ugly or not.” Burgess… Read more...

Cadets improve on the mat, prepare for late season tests
There was no rest for the weary when it comes to Benedictine wrestling and the Christmas break. Last week, the Cadets hosted Deep Run and Huguenot at Rutt Court on the downtown campus in a pre-holiday match. The Cadets emerged with two wins and prepare to enter the meat of the season on a winning note. “My kids have had about 20 matches so far this season,” said Cadet coach Ryan Hall. “I’m a firm believer in the only way to get better in wrestling is to wrestle. We’re approaching the mid-point of the season. When January hits,… Read more...

Lack of facilities has not deterred Salem Christian School
Since opening its door 15 years ago, Salem Christian School in Crozier has been shaping young minds in the classroom. More recently they’ve been doing so in the field of athletics as well. Though still relatively young, the small Goochland private school is quickly becoming recognized for its quality in both areas. Six years ago Salem Christian started its athletic program as a member of the Virginia Commonwealth Athletic Association (VCAA). The VCAA includes mostly Christian Schools and smaller private schools (Grove Ave Christian, Victory Christian, The Carmel School,… Read more...
