image

Last week the private schools that play sports in Goochland County got a chance to extend their winning ways in post season play.

This week, it’s time for Goochland’s public schools to do the same.

If the first day of the James River District Championships is any sign, the Bulldogs could be playing for several more weeks.

In Monday night’s JRD openers, Goochland pitched a complete shutout on visiting opponents. The Bulldogs’ baseball, softball and boys soccer teams notched three wins and did not give up a single score… Read more...

Benedictine pulls out 3-2 win over St. Chris

The ghost of Rod Serling must have taken in a baseball game Thursday night.

In an ending worthy of Serling’s long-running television show, “The Twilight Zone,” Benedictine’s Cadets emerged from a dimension of sight and sound and mind to find themselves 3-2 victors over St. Christopher’s in a Virginia Independent Schools’ Division I semifinal baseball game at Shepherd Stadium.

The top-seeded Cadets will return to Shepherd Stadium on Saturday to face the winner of today’s other semifinal between Bishop Ireton and Paul VI for the state championship… Read more...

Third time charm brings repeat title for Saints

image

The St. Catherine softball team provided ample evidence to the old belief that it is difficult to beat a team three times in a single season. After twice losing to rival Collegiate during the regular season, the Saints utilized aggressive play to take advantage of Cougar miscues and win the LIS championship for the second straight year, 7-3.

Collegiate committed all four of their errors in the first two innings which contributed to a 4-0 St. Catherine lead that proved too much to overcome.

“That’s not typical of the way we played this year,”… Read more...

Good news, bad news for Bulldogs baseball

image

After a convincing win at Randolph Henry earlier in the week, the Goochland varsity baseball game dropped its first James River District game of the season to visiting Buckingham on Thursday.

The 5-4 loss stung the Bulldogs after they learned they had wrapped up the district title no matter what happens with the two remaining games.

“We may have been a little complacent,” said Goochland head coach Wes Farkas. “Amelia lost and that sealed the district for us, and we may have lost some focus today.”

The loss came two days… Read more...

Road warrior softball returns home

image

The Goochland softball team finally returned home last Wednesday after an extended period on the road. The Bulldogs (13-1, 10-0 JRD) last played at home on Apr. 27 and even though they swept the slate of road games, as the saying goes, there’s no place like home.

Facing Cumberland in a Wednesday James River District matchup, Goochland kept their momentum going with a 7-0, win. It was their eighth shutout in 13 games this season.

“It feels good to have some home games,” said Goochland head coach Amy Henneberger. “We have a good following, a lot of parents… Read more...

Eagle makes Classic connection with Feed More

image

When the “Road to the LPGA” makes it annual August stop at Richmond Country Club one of the lesser publicized benefits to the community comes from money given to local charities. While the list of charities over the past years has been diverse, none would appear to be timelier than the one selected to benefit from this year’s Eagle Classic at RCC.

Last week, the LPGA Symetra Tour event organizers (formerly the LPGA Futures Tour) announced that Richmond based FeedMore will be the recipient of the charity proceeds from the Aug. 13-19 golf tournament.

Goochland tennis serving up a memorable season

image

With two weeks remaining in the regular season, the Goochland girl’s tennis team has already surpassed their win total of 2011. The return to the James River District coincided with a year of additional experience to make this a turnaround season for the Bulldogs.

Coach Teresa Hood came into the season knowing her team had potential to do good things. “I was really fortunate that my top six all returned form last year and they have all improved dramatically in their play from last year,” she said.

Mackenzie Nunnally (#1) and Riley Allison… Read more...
