Goochland teenager gives Duramed Futures Tour sizzle

Teenage golfer Amanda Steinhagen has been hotter than the weather in recent weeks. Will she continue to sizzle when competing against the next generation of LPGA professionals?

  Steinhagen, an 18-year-old amateur from Oak Hill, has accepted an invitation to compete in next month’s $100,000 Greater Richmond Golf Classic at Richmond Country Club. Her presence adds a splash of regional interest to the Duramed Futures Tour’s annual visit to the 6,278-yard course on west Patterson Avenue.

Wallace uncaps Miller Lite promotion

Last week, NASCAR driver Rusty Wallace returned to victory lane at Richmond International Raceway. However, this time around the man, who ranks as the third all-time winner at Richmond with six victories, was not there to celebrate a race victory. Instead the former driver of the Miller Lite #2 car cruised into victory lane behind the wheel of a new white Ford Mustang as part of a promotional partnership between RIR and Loveland Distributing- a local distributor of Miller Lite and Miller-Coors.

Second annual Henricus Dauber Dash set for August 7

  The second annual Henricus Dauber Dash, a 5-mile mud run through Henricus Historical Park and the Dutch Gap Conservation area, is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, August 7.

  Named for the Daubers that built the mud walls and houses at the settlement site 400 years ago, the run features a course that starts at the Citie of Henricus and goes around the trail loop of Dutch Gap. The course incorporates multiple obstacles including hay bales, a cargo net, a short trudge through the river, and a final mud pit at the finish line designed to challenge the participants.… Read more...

Strikers take third

The GUSA Fury earned third place in the Jefferson Open 3v3 tournament hosted by the Richmond Strikers and KickIt 3v3 on July 17-18 at the West Creek Soccer Complex.  The Fury, competing in the U8 Travel division against teams from around the Metro Richmond area, finished with a 3-3 record.

Skills challenge hopes to be bigger draw

Before the professional golfers tee things up for a chance to win the Greater Richmond Golf Classic August 13-15 at Richmond Country Club, a select few will face a different kind of challenge. As the host site for the finals of the Sun Mountain Skills Challenge, four of the Duramed FUTURE Tour’s top golfers will lead teams of local amateurs in an event organizers hope will quickly turn into a fan favorite.

Hoopla 3 on 3 Tournament a family affair

When this year’s Allen & Allen Hoopla 3 on 3 Tournament kicks off July 24 at the Dominion campus in the Innsbrook office park, one Goochland family will feel right at home. The Williams’ have made the Sports Backers’ annual basketball tournament a family affair. Jeff Williams has coached his daughter Megan’s team, the Rockville Extreme Blue Team, for the last three tournaments.

3 on 3 Tournament postponed

Due to scorching record temperatures forecasted for this weekend, the Allen, Allen, Allen & Allen Hoopla 3 on 3 basketball tournament scheduled for July 24-25 has been postponed to October 9-10, 2010.

“Given the forecasted record temperatures, we do not feel this tournament would offer the fun, friendly and, most importantly, safe atmosphere that we wish to provide our participants, volunteers and spectators,” said tournament director Megan Silva.

Goochland Minors capture championship

After a shaky start in their opener, the Goochland Minors All-Star team righted the ship and breezed to a championship in the Dixie League Tournament being held at Hidden Rock Park. Goochland exited the competition without a loss and sporting a defense that allowed a total of only eight runs.

  The team, comprised of 9-10-year olds selected from various teams in the GYAA league, opened the tournament facing the Powhatan Americans. Maidens resident helps win AAU Championship

Maidens resident Troy McDermott, a rising sophomore at Goochland High School, contributed 11 points, as Richmond Metro AAU defeated Carolina Surge for the USBA 15U National Championship on May 10 in Myrtle Beach, SC. 

  After going 2-1 in pool play, Metro was seeded fourth for Saturday’s single elimination Championship Round.  After morning and mid-day victories, the stage was set for Metro’s afternoon square off against the Surge, coached by Michael Jordan’s brother, Larry.

Youth well served at Optimist Golf Tournament

For area golfers, it was a chance to up their game to the next level and take a shot at a free trip to Florida to complete nationally on a PGA course. For the local Optimist Club, it was another way of helping America’s youth and lending a helping hand.
