Swim teams get in workout before regionals
The Goochland swim teams got in a quick workout last Saturday evening when they traveled to Ashland to face off against Patrick Henry. The two teams of similar size kept things rolling in a meet that finished in an amazing 75 minutes. Patrick Henry won both team competitions with a 123-39 victory for the girls and a 87-60 win for the boys. But despite the speed of the meet, the Group A Bulldogs turned in some impressive performances against the Group AAA opponent. “I think this was one of our best meets,” said Goochland head coach Elizabeth Ford.… Read more...

Bulldogs looking for late season surge
Last week, when the Cumberland girls basketball team showed up at Goochland minus their number one scorer, it appeared the Lady Bulldogs might have a shot at beating the league leading Dukes. It didn’t work out that way. Even without Mecka Anderson, the Dukes (10-1, 15-1) employed a high-energy game plan to defeat the struggling Bulldogs, 53-39. The loss leaves Goochland in the James River District’s third slot, but the game also represents a pattern that is troubling for head coach Sarah Voyack. “We don’t have improvement… Read more...

Cadets third in limited State Catholic meet
Saturday brought inclement weather across the state but the day’s wrestling events planned at Benedictine’s Rut Gym went on- albeit with a few modifications to the State Catholic Championship Tournament. “We had nine teams coming, then the weather slowed down a few of the Northern Virginia schools,” said Benedictine Head Coach Ryan Hall. Instead, Benedictine, Seton School, Bishop Sullivan, Peninsula Catholic and Roanoke Catholic faced off in a tournament that was changed into dual meets to determine the team champion. Then the top two… Read more...

RIR revs up for 60th year of NASCAR
NASCAR’s return to town may still be a few months away but Richmond International Raceway is revving up the celebration early. This year, RIR enters its 60th anniversary of NASCAR and the track wants to make it a season to remember. The anniversary gives RIR a chance to commemorate the past while looking towards the future. “I think it gives us some opportunities on a lot of fronts,” said track president Dennis Bickmeier. “One is to really engage fans and interact with them, with their thoughts and memories of RIR; the drivers, past performers here,… Read more...

Bulldogs suffer third straight loss in Raider romp, 61-44
In a contest that was so physical it resembled a football game at some points, the Amelia Raiders (8-1, 5-0) solidified their hold on the top slot in the James River District with a 61-44 win over Goochland on Friday night. The Raiders employed a pressure defense that resulted in 20 turnovers for the Bulldogs. Meanwhile, Amelia’s fast break offense capitalized on many of them. “That’s what we do,” said Amelia coach Everett Watkins. “We try to be physical and I thought we could have been more physical than we were tonight. Most… Read more...

Salem Christian splits games
On Tuesday, Jan. 10 the Salem Christian girls varsity basketball team traveled to Victory Christian Academy to take on the Knights. The win improved the Saints record to 8-1 while the Knights fell to 2-3. Katherine Barth led the team with a game high 26 points and Courtney Richardson added nine. On Thursday, Salem Christian visited Central Virginia Homeschool in a fight for second place… Read more...

Goochland kicker Colby Cooke named All-American
Cooke, 6-foot-3, 190 pounds, hit 17 field goals this season, which ties Shane Graham for second most in VHSL history. His longest was 51 yards, which came in the Division 2 state title game, which the Bulldogs lost 21-16 to Gretna. Cooke received a full ride to Vanderbilt. He intends to grayshirt, meaning he won’t enroll until January of 2013. Cooke was the only kicker selected to the 53-member All-American team. Three Virginians made it, including Alex Carter, a 6-1, 190-pound defensive back from Briar Woods, and Trey Edmunds, a 6-2, 205-pound running back from Dan River. … Read more...

Powhatan defeats Bulldogs in second matchup
For the second time in seven days, Goochland and Powhatan squared off on the basketball court and the result was a split. Monday night, it was Goochland’s turn to host but Powhatan’s turn to win as the Indians left town with a 70-57 victory. The Bulldogs snatched an early lead but once the Indians drew even at six they never looked back. Powhatan’s aggressive play on the boards and young undersized backcourt shredded the usually stingy Bulldog defense to lead by as much as 19 points. “That was probably the best game we’ve played… Read more...

Benedictine picks up second half pace with Burgess
Benedictine senior Jordan Burgess made it look easy as he piled up 39 points against Amelia Academy last week in a 71-47 victory for the #6 Cadets. The game high performance was just five points off the school record, but those who know Burgess will tell you personal records don’t matter much to the unselfish VCU commit. “Jordan Burgess is a warrior.” said Cadet coach Sean McAloon. “I would take 12 of him any day of the week, not only because he’s talented, but because he approaches the game the right way.” According to McAloon,… Read more...

Major changes could be on the way via VHSL reclassification
An ad hoc committee formed by the VHSL is recommending sweeping changes to the way state schools are classified. “This time in the league’s history is an ideal opportunity to consider fresh, nontraditional ideas,” according to the committee meeting’s minutes. The committee supports doubling the current three classifications to six. The smallest class (1A) would consist of schools of 475 or fewer students (currently 55 schools). The rest would be divided into equal fifths of about 52 schools. That means all Central Region schools, which currently play in Group AAA,… Read more...
