Seemingly scoring at will, the Goochland boys’ soccer team made quick work of Altavista in the Region B quarterfinals, cruising to an 8-0 win.
“It seems like we’re peaking at just the right time we need to peak,” said Goochland head coach Ron Spessard.

Even more impressive than the score is the fact that Goochland got goals from five different players. Sophomore Tyler Woods scored three times against the Colonels while junior Bryan Henley added two of his own. The Bulldogs also got scores from junior Luke Gall, senior Daniel Lee and freshman Will Boinest.

Even though the Goochland team appears to possess the mentality of being unstoppable on offense, Spessard does not believe it is something that will go to their heads. “I don’t think it’s bravado,” he said. “I think it’s confidence based on the fact that they’re just doing it without thinking about it.”

While the Goochland offense drew all of the attention, the Bulldogs’ defense was equally impressive, rarely allowing Atlavista to move the ball past midfield. “They all held their position, fought for the ball and did extremely well,” Spessard said. “They’re like the unsung people always and they’re expected to stop everything. But the truth is, the ball got through, they turned it around. The defense is like a stone wall, they never quit.”

Altavista …... 0 0 – 0
Goochland…. 4 4 – 8
G: Tyler Woods 3, Bryan Henley 2, Luke Gall, Daniel Lee, Will Boinest. Saves: J.T. Simpson (A) 6; Matt Eby (G) 8.
