Who works for Goochland, and how much do they make?

Next week Goochland polls will be open for citizens to cast their vote for our community’s leaders. Over the past weeks and months, citizens have been subjected to a barrage of signs, flyers and commercials.

But beneath the shiny surface of soundbites lies the truth. And by listening to speeches and debates, we can determine for ourselves what, and who, makes sense to us.

Our political choices should be as informed as possible, as should all of our choices regarding local government.

The Gazette is giving our readers new tools to get, and stay, better informed about our county.

We have added two searchable databases to our Web site.

The first database, at http://www.goochlandgazette.com/index.php/data/government_salaries/, is a list of full-time government employees, their annual salaries and supplemental income.

The second database at http://www.goochlandgazette.com/index.php/data/school_salaries/ lists full-time emloyees and their annual salaries. Employees earning less than $10,000 are not included, with the exception of Goochland County School Board members who earn $5,500 per year.

Both databases are based on information provided by Goochland County, and during election and budget seasons, give readers new ways to discover how our government is using our resources.

Just recently read about potential school cuts, and now reviewed some salaries.
It appears many at Central Office and some Principals and other top positions (ie Director positions at the HS) could be looked into as far as salary cuts.  Reducing salaries like private companies do in tough economic times, should be the 1st priority in balancing the budget.  This could be done on a sliding scale, ie anyone making < 40k per yr no reduction, 50-60k, 3%, 60-70 -5 %, 80-90 10%, 90 + 15% etc.

I really appreciate the Gazette’s efforts to help Goochland citizens better understand County operations and spending.  However, your salary database has little value.  I am not interested in who makes what.  A better service would provide statistics on past salary averages, recent increases and current averages.  Last week the Las Vegas Review Journal reported the average Clark County employee salary is $90,000.  I was shocked.  I wonder about Goochland County.

My observation outside of the County Office building (the old GHS)—the cars that are “allocated” for County officials are often gas-guzzling large SUVs. To balance our budget, letting these cars go (and other perks of the boom time) might be a better starting point than our school teachers?
