Recreation
We continue to get letters to the editor, as you’ll see in this week’s edition, from local parents and residents who are eager to see a number of activities for children.
Consequently, this week’s View From the Dog Pound asked about problems facing Goochland teens and one of the responses speaks directly to activities, more specifically the lack thereof.
As Goochland has continued to grow in recent years, one thing many people have seemed to forget is the need to not only educate the children but to also give them opportunities to experience some form of recreation.
Now, even as an absolute sports junkie, I fully realize that the “ball sports” aren’t for everyone. And as our world becomes more and more diverse, we contine to redefine recreation.
Take the extreme sports, for example. Skateboarding hasn’t always been looked upon in the most favorable light. But anyone who’s ever heard of Tony Hawk—or his video game—knows that it’s quickly becoming one of America’s favorites.
If you look at the broad spectrum of activities for children throughout society, even in 2008 where iPods and video games reign supreme, it’s also noteworthy that participation in sports is at an all-time high. Part of that is due to the number of kids. But a large part also comes from children being allowed to take a step towards the sports and activities that speak to them.
Rather than push our children into the big three—football, baseball, and basketball—kids today are getting into lacrosse or biking, skateboarding or field hockey.
Either way, I believe I learned a great deal throughout my formative years from my involvement in team sports. The lessons and challenges were abundant.
As the county grows, it’s inherent that not just its roads but its sidelines find room to stretch out and breathe.
Officials have taken a number of good steps in recent months to focus their attention on the recreational aspect of growth. But lest we forget, as the summer begins its ascent in our mind’s eye and on our calendars, there are a number of options which aren’t afforded to our children right now. And we have to do the best for them that we can. Maybe we can’t cover everything, but we can certainly do our part to try.
Memorial Day
As we come to another of our nation’s most important holidays, and another one of those tell-tale signs of summer’s pending arrival, I’d like to take a moment and remember of all of those who have served this country, both at home and abroad, in defense our beliefs and our safety. Without those great men and women, we wouldn’t recognize either our country or ourselves.
So to those who laid down the ultimate sacrifice upon the altar of freedom, a grateful nation, though we may not always show it, thanks you.
