Heating up in Goochland

It is summertime, when the fish are jumping and the crops grow high.

But it remains to be seen if times will be easy in Goochland over the next few months. And I look forward to seeing it.

I will just be watching from a distance for a little while.

Next week I’ll be taking to the sky, toward the Reynolds School of Journalism in Reno, Nevada.

This journey is made possible by a fellowship from The Maynard Institute.  I am pleased and privileged to have been one of the 14 journalists chosen by that organization to take part in a grant-funded, six-week multimedia editing workshop.

Goochland is changing, and journalism is changing.

Mastering communication technologies will enable The Gazette to create both a stronger print product and a more interactive Web site.

So Goochland evolves, we will be able to convey those transformations in ways that do not replace, but enhance, what is found on the printed page.

We will be able to better use our Web site to show videos and slideshows of events in the county, offer faster updates and breaking news, and provide more in-depth resources for the people of Goochland.

Staff writer Ken Odor will be taking the reigns of The Gazette over the next month and a half, and can be reached at or 627.3249.
In the meantime, I’ll be reading e-mails and blogs, and following tweets and Web site updates.

Because being Web savvy means, in my case, being savvy to what will be going on in Goochland, even while my feet are wandering thousands of miles from the county line!
