Man-to-Man program needs to be preserved

The fate of the Man-to-Man program (see page 1 story), an initiative of departing Goochland Elementary Principal Stacey Austin designed to provide mentoring to boys at GES is uncertain with the departure of Austin for a new job in Chesterfield.
Austin started the program while at Randolph Elementary School and brought it to GES this year when he was transferred. It’s hard to imagine a more worthwhile activity and actually, with the generous sponsorship of the Goochland Rotary Club, things are looking pretty good provided the new GES principal supports it. According to Rotary member Richard Carchman, the club is providing enough money to fund a Man to Man program at Byrd and Randolph too, if leadership can be found at those schools. Let’s hope it continues at GES and is started back up at RES and comes to BES for the first time – the boys will surely benefit.
Better than your average wine festival
That seemed to be the verdict of many who attended the Spring Jubilee at Rassawek over the weekend.
With exhibits and historic structures galore spread over a beautiful landscape of rolling hills, ponds and vineyards in western Goochland, visitors had an opportunity to enjoy the produce from six different wineries while enjoying an array of heritage exhibits.
For a first time attempt, it appeared no effort was spared to entice the festival goers to return next year. Congratulations are in order for all the sponsors and volunteers who pitched in to make the event a success.
