Eugene Rawlin “Peanut” Payne of Gum Spring, Va. was a delightful, devoted, hardworking, loving and caring man who departed this life on March 9, 2007. He is survived by two daughters, Marchelle Payne-Gassaway and Christy Brown; three grandchildren, Shawn Payne, Lawren Brown and Dylan Gassaway; two sisters, Carriebell Barrett and Girleen Dandridge; three brothers, Daniel Robinson and Purcell and Alphonso Payne; five aunts, Ethel, Eva and Fannie Robinson, Loretta Hayden and Laura Payne; two uncles, Roosevelt and Nickademus Robinson; 17 nieces and nephews, two sisters-in-law, and other devoted relatives and friends. Eugene was the son of the late Melcena Payne Page and the late Linwood Payne. The family would like to extend gratitude to the doctors and staff at The Massey Cancer Clinic, Henrico Doctors’ Hospital and Regional Memorial Hospital, and to pastor, members and worshipers of Gum Spring United Methodist Church. Services entrusted to Robert Mealy Funeral Home, 2530 Dogtown Road, Goochland, Va. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Shady Grove Baptist Church, Gum Spring, Va., where Eugene will lie in state one hour prior to funeral time. Burial will occur in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight (Wednesday) 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
