Carpenter

Mark Frederick Carpenter, 55, of Goochland, went to be with his Lord and Savior June 10, 2010, after a brief battle with cancer. He was born on April 13, 1955, in Syracuse, N.Y. He moved to Richmond in 1973, met his wife in 1987, they married on Oct. 27, 1990, and moved to Goochland. He is preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Uhl Carpenter, Father and Mother-in-law, Welford and June Willis.  He is survived by his wife of nineteen and a half years, Donna Willis Carpenter; a son, Travis Scott Carpenter; and a daughter, Lindsay Nicole Carpenter;  Dana L. York, to whom he was like a father for twenty-two years; his father, Howard E Carpenter; and his friend, Barbara Sliter; two sisters, Leslie E. Carpenter and Lisa Vangor and her husband John. On his wife’s side he had three sister-in-laws and two brother-in-laws. He had many nieces and nephews. Two childhood friends who were like brothers, Jeff Waldo and Curt Harris. Also, a very close friend, Johnny Estes. Mark had many other good friends. Mark worked for Commonwealth Painting and Decorating for thirty years and was an excellent painter and a very hard worker.  We all loved him and will miss him dearly. A memorial service will be held June 18th, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Victory Christian Fellowship, 2850 Maidens Road, Goochland, VA 23063. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Mark Carpenter Memorial Fund, Wachovia Bank, 3018 River Rd. West, Goochland, VA.  23063, a college fund for Mark’s children, Travis and Lindsay.  The Carpenter Family would like to thank everyone for their outpouring of prayers and support during this difficult time.

Carter

Raymond K. Carter Jr., 82, Lt. Col. Army retired, of Orange Park, Fla., died June 3, 2010. Born and raised in Goochland, Ray’s military career spanned 30 years, three wars and covered the globe. His career decorations include the Legion of Merit, two Bronze Stars, the Combat Infantry Badge, Master Parachutist Badge and the coveted Green Beret. He was a charter member of the 77th Special Forces Group in 1959 and served another 15 years as an officer in Special Forces. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #90 Indian River, Florida and Shrine Morocco. Ray is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Mildred Humphries, also of Goochland; sons, Col. Army retired Raymond K. Carter III (Helen), Lt. Col. Army retired James C. Carter and Michael “Duke” Carter (Judi); brother, Carl Carter Sr. and wife, Eleanor; grandsons, Raymond IV, Matthew, David and K.C.; four great-grandchildren; and granddog, Pepper. The family received visitors on June 9, 2010 at Norman Funeral Home, Goochland, Va. Funeral services with military honors and Masonic Rites were held Thursday, June 10, 2010 at Forest Grove Church, 3881 Hadensville-Fife Rd., Goochland. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a favorite charity.

Coleman

Dorothy Washington Coleman, “Dot”, 68, of Richmond, passed away at home June 10, 2010. She was preceded in death by her mother, Janie Darby. She is survived by her sons, Melvin Washington (Vernice) and Antione Washington (Linda); five grandchildren, Shameka, Cheryl, Monica, Evan, and John; three great-grandchildren, Sadeh, Shunti, and Jameriah; a sister, Carrie Mae Goode; devoted nephew, Cornelius Washington; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Family received friends at the Carlton T. Brooks Funeral Home, 2200 Hull Street, Monday, June 14, 2010. Funeral services were held there Tuesday, June 15, 2010. Pastor Braunda Ridley officiated. Graveside services were held at Maury Cemetery.

Hawk

James William Hawk III, Little Red, passed away suddenly May 27, 2010 in the town of Barksdale, Wis. as the result of a terrible automobile accident.  He was born December 5, 1984 in Richmond.  His paternal grandparents, Jimmy and Shirley Hawk, his maternal grandmother, and his baby sister, Angel Hawk have met him in heaven.  Left to cherish his life are his Mom and Dad, Jean Gordon (Larry) and Red Hawk (Valerie); his siblings Alayna Hawk of Goochland, Amy, Joshua, and Matthew Gordon, and Travis Barningham and his son, Madosin, all of Red Cliff, WI; his Fiance, Caitlin Gorman and their unborn child; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins; too many friends to name; and family dogs in WI. and Va.  Services were held at the Red Cliff Elderly Center May 30, 2010 and May 31, 2010 with burial in the new Red Cliff Cemetery.
