Netherland
Netherland, John D., 73, of Gum Spring, went to be with the Lord, Friday, April 18, 2008. He was born January 26, 1935 to the late Robert Glenn Netherland, Sr. and Ada Harr Netherland. Early years in Bluff City, Tenn., led to life-long service to his country, state, church, family, and friends. He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1955, and then embarked on a career with the Virginia Department of Corrections from 1959 to 1999. Forty years of devotion to duty and service culminated with his attainment of the position of Warden Senior. John was a committed veteran, serving with the American Legion Post 215 in Goochland as the Vice Commander, always lending a helping hand to our veterans. He was a devoted Christian, and was a member of Ragland Memorial Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He touched everyone’s lives that he came into contact with and always saw the good in people. John was a Free Mason in the Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Betty L. Netherland, his sons, Mike Netherland and wife Laurie of Williamsburg, Allen Netherland and wife Bonnie of Midlothian, Jerry Netherland and wife Marina of Chester, his brothers, Robert Glenn Netherland, Jr. and wife Shirley of Goochland, James L. Netherland and wife Linda of Powhatan, his sister, Nancy Edwards of Atlanta, GA, his grandchildren, Michael, Taylor, and Meagan, along with numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. The family received friends Monday, April 21, 2008 at Ragland Memorial Baptist Church. A funeral service was held Tuesday, April 22, 2008, at Ragland Memorial Baptist Church. Graveside services followed in the church cemetery. The Rev. Ed Rodriguez and the Rev. Howard Baldwin officiated. Honors were provided by the Virginia Department of Corrections Honor Guard and American Legion Color Guard. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the American Legion Post 215, P.O. Scruggs
Scruggs, Janice Smith, 45, of Goochland, passed away at home on April 13, 2008. She is survived by her husband, Daryl Scruggs; one son, Darin Scruggs; one daughter, Kelly Scruggs, all of Goochland; her mother and father, Everette and Audrey Smith; two sisters, Genevieve and husband, Ernie Wood, and Virginia Sanford; one nephew, Robbie Wood; many aunts, uncles and loving cousins. The family received friends at the Norman Funeral Home, Tuesday, April 15, 2008. Services were held Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at Dover Baptist Church, Manakin Sabot, Va. Graveside services were held in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Dover Baptist Church Building Fund.
