Carter
Harriet Cowles Carter, “Boo”, died peacefully Feb. 24, 2010 at the age of 103. Born in Toano, Va. in 1906, Boo outlived her parents and all seven of her siblings. She was also predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Ray Carter. She is survived by her daughter, Harriet Carter Meader, son-in-law Clark Meader, beloved grandchildren Tyler and Carter Meader, great-granddaughter Elena Meader and many nieces and nephews. After graduating from Longwood with a Bachelor of Science in Education, Boo started her lifelong vocation as a teacher in a career spanning fourty five years, Boo first taught at Brook Hill School where she became the principal. When that became part of Henrico, she moved first to Binford and then to Albert H. Hill where she taught English. Her genuine love for her students and her great sense of humor made her insistence that they learn grammar more palatable. She loved that in later years wherever she went, former students would stop her and recount stories of her classes. Boo was a founding member of Reveille Methodist Church and served in circles and as the liason to the Hermitage bazaar. A former member of the Hermitage County Club and the Tuckahoe Women’s Club, she was an avid bridge player and would travel anywhere to play or substitute in a bridge game. The family appreciates the excellent care and the kindness of the staff at Cedarfield and would particularly like to thank Jeanne Burnette and Jerry Bogley, devoted caregivers, who have looked after Boo for six years. A graveside service was held Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010 at Westhampton Memorial Park. A celebration of her life followed at Cedarfield Parkway in Richmond. The family received friends in the fellowship Hall at Cedarfield. In lieu of flowers make donation to the charity of your choice.
