Electoral Board ponders precinct split

The Goochland Electoral Board is looking into whether the Manakin Precinct needs a second polling place.

On Nov. 4, during the latest presidential election, unprecedented morning crowds clogged roads and hundreds of voters lined up early.

“It’s just that everyone decided to come in the morning,” said Shirley Christian, chair of the Electoral Board.

As poll closing time approached at Dover Church, voting had slowed to a trickle.

Nevertheless, the Board of Supervisors asked the electoral board to search for an additional site for District 5—to… Read more...

All welcome at new food pantry

Times are getting harder, and reports nationwide say more folks are visiting food pantries to supplement their food supplies.

At St. Matthews Methodist Church in Centerville, everyone is welcome.

You don’t have to live in Goochland County and you don’t have to provide income information to meet an eligibility requirement.

“It’s very nice; they treat you with respect,” said Barbara Davis on her second visit to the food pantry last Wednesday evening, the night before Thanksgiving.
Not only does the church open their food pantry each Wednesday… Read more...

GCPS’ planned 2009-10 budget

At the Goochland County School Board Workshop held on Nov. 25, Superintendent Linda Underwood presented a preliminary plan for the FY 2009-2010 budget.

“Difficult times require difficult decisions,” said Underwood, acknowledging an economy that has created challenges such as state budget shortfalls and county flat-funding. “We must continue to move forward with essential instruction.”

“The bottom line,” she added, “is that we are in for a rough year, but we can’t put our heads in a hole and hope it goes away.”

Goochland Elementary School principal takes a ride for reading

It was about 9:30 on the Tuesday morning before Thanksgiving.

Standing on the hill in front of the school, the entire student body of Goochland Elementary School was peering intently down Route 6 toward the courthouse.

So what were the students waiting for?

The first glimpse of their principal, Dianna Gordon, on the back of a Harley Davidson motorcycle, that’s what.

Principals are always promising to kiss pot-bellied pigs, take a pie in the face and all manner of other stunts to reward students for reaching special goals.

Gordon had promised to zoom into… Read more...

Suit may go forward against Buildings and Grounds chief

Circuit Court Judge Timothy Sanner ruled on Nov. 21 that former Goochland County employee David F. Ligon III may go forward with a suit for defamation against Goochland Buildings and Grounds Superintendent Cecile H. Youngblood.

Ligon’s original complaint, filed on Aug. 1, claimed that on Mar. 11 he was unfairly fired by Youngblood after complaining, first to Commonwealth Attorney Claiborne H. Stokes Jr. and then to the Sheriff’s Department, about his supervisor’s alleged misuse of county resources.

Ligon filed suit against both Youngblood and Goochland County,… Read more...

Turning a passion into a profession

Tucked back into a little business area on the south side of Route 6 not far from West Creek, you’ll find a man happy to be at work.

James Bowler, 44, seems to have found his niche.

“I turned my hobby into a business,” said Bowler in an interview at his shop.

Bowler’s company is Weldone, Inc., a play on words, since one of his main skills is welding.

He does fabrication and design mostly for auto related jobs.

But his real passion is building racing cars, and restoring classics, like the European sports cars of the 60s, like Triumphs… Read more...

Planning Commission defers request for shopping center rezoning request

Acknowledging strong opposition from the public, the Goochland County Planning Commission deferred a decision regarding the rezoning of ten acres of land located behind Satterwhite’s Restaurant on Route 250. Developers submitted the request to clear the way for an 85,000 square foot shopping center with four out parcels on the site.

Despite holding one community meeting and two sessions described as staff meetings with concerned residents, many citizens took advantage of the public hearing earlier this week to express a feeling the process did not represent open communication or… Read more...

Message in a bottle launches new friendship for Goochland girl

It was June, 2007, and Karna Jandzinski was on vacation at her grandparents’ home in Augusta, Maine.

“It was a rainy day,” said her mom Kristin, who came up with a project for Karna (8) and her sister Maya (3) and brother Keith (11).

Why not write letters and put them in bottles and throw them in the Atlantic?

Like in the movies.

Actually, Kristin had some experience to draw on, since she once found a message in a bottle when she was a little girl. But water had gotten inside and the writing was illegible.

“That was a big letdown,”… Read more...

Learning from their mistakes

About a dozen parents heard some surprising advice at an evening meeting sponsored by the Goochland Office on Youth.

“Go home with the idea that you want your child to make a mistake and have the opportunity to learn from it,” said instructor Linda Coulson.

Coulson, a licensed clinical social worker for the Goochland Department of Social Services, told parents that children need to learn that their decisions have consequences.

Coulson was assisted in the two- hour class, held at the Goochland Public Schools Specialty Center, by Kendall Stokes, who is working… Read more...

Volunteering for the holidays

Imagine a holiday season where you hoped only for a pair of warm socks, a mouse trap or batteries for your smoke alarm. The nonprofit organization will respond to these “wish lists” by delivering holiday remembrances along with nutritious meals.
