Local letters shed new light on Civil War

A special meeting of the Goochland Historical Society was held on March 12 at Byrd Church to mark the publication of the latest edition of its journal, which showcases little known letters from the front lines of the Civil War.

Written by William Callis Kean, whose family tree includes many prominent names in Goochland history, to his niece, Susan Kean Boston, the letters provide an intimate look at the war through the eyes of one soldier. Kean survived the war and lived out his life at Oakley near Dogtown Road.  He is buried in the cemetery at Byrd Church.

Former Peace Corps member will join book festival

Still in college, Goochland resident Sandy Fisher traveled to Washington D.C. in 1961 to hear John F. Kennedy exhort Americans to give back to the country in his famous inaugural address.

“Ask not what your country can do for you,” said Kennedy in a dramatic summation that those listening in person or to the address on TV and radio still remember, “Ask what you can do for your country.”

Fisher, then 21, decided he would do just that and joined the Peace Corps in 1962. Beside’s Kennedy’s stirring speech, Fisher said he was also influenced by his… Read more...

Local 4th of July celebration coming to an end after 30 years

After 30+ years of hosting the local 4th of July Celebration, Cartersville Ruritan Club regretfully calls an end to this longstanding tradition.

“We’ve had many successful years, first on the Greens overlooking the James River and more recently at the Club’s location in Cartersville on Route 45. For many years, this has been the biggest event in Cartersville and Cumberland County. When we lost the Greens four years ago, we were worried that the event would suffer. To our surprise, the first year was a success and people enjoyed the change in venue. Unfortunately with… Read more...
