Local broker named president of Richmond Association of Realtors

Goochland County resident Scott Ruth has been involved in the real estate profession for 11 years.

He started as an agent for Long and Foster at their Tuckahoe Office on Patterson Avenue in December 2000. In 2005, he became broker for the office, and now he carries not only that title, but also the president of the Richmond Association of Realtors.

One of the aspects of being a broker that he enjoys is helping agents succeed in the real estate business.

Goochland student travels to Ghana for VCU service learning mission

Home for the Holidays is taking on new meaning for one Goochland County resident.

Last month, GHS graduate and VCU senior Jarvis McCowin left for a 17-day trip to Ghana.

Each year, VCU’s Graduate School of Social Work holds an application process for the service learning trip to Accra, Ghana, under the leadership of Rev. Eric Annan who is the leader of the Grace Home International School and the Sovereign Global Mission Program in Ghana.

McCowin was one of 13 students selected to take part in this year’s mission.

Creasey and Peterson to lead Board of Supervisors

Goochland’s Board of Supervisors elected District 3 Republican Ned S. Creasey to be its chairman at last week’s organizational meeting.

Creasey was the only one of four incumbents running for re-election to retain his seat.

Ken Peterson, who defeated Planning Commissioner Courtney Hyers for the Republican nomination in District 5 and then ran unopposed, was selected to be vice-chairman.

Goochland County Residents Receive Holiday Git from FEMA

Earlier this week it was announced that residents of Goochland County who were affected by the Aug. 23 earthquake would be included in the Individual Assistance Declaration.

This announcement came after intense work by local and state officials to have the concerns of our residents heard. Our concerns were heard, and on Tuesday the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) granted Governor Robert McDonnell’s request to have Goochland County added to the list of localities covered under the Individual Assistance Declaration.

Judge swears in new officials

Almost 200 people crowded into the Goochland Circuit Court building last Thursday to see perhaps the most significant swearing in of new county officials in decades.

“It is important to publicly recognize those who have chosen to serve their fellow citizens,” said Chief Circuit Court Judge Timothy K. Sanner before he began with the swearing in process.

Each of the elected officials was called forward and sworn individually, as well as the deputies of the constituional officers, after which each signed a copy of the oath.

Goochland Education Parents Association has a new chairman

The Goochland Education Parents Association is a political action group….of sorts.

They don’t endorse candidates and don’t make policy statements about issues. They do sponsor forums and debates.

“We are like a conduit for conveying information,” said GEPA chairman Marc Maier in a phone interview Dec. 21.

“We have 159 names on our email list, and we send them information about the school board, administration and education news in general. We want to keep them informed about what is going on in Goochland County schools.”

Farmers Market to re-open in Goochland Courthouse

The sights and sounds of a farmers market are coming back to Goochland Courthouse next year.

Keith Flannagan said last Friday that The Center for Rural Culture (CRC) would operate a market at Grace Episcopal Church in Goochland Courthouse every Saturday from May 5 through October 20 next year.

The weekly event will be called the Goochland Community Farmers Market, said Flannagan, who is the current Treasurer of CRC.

Money spent translates into victory in Goochland supervisor races

The winners in the four contested Goochland supervisors’ races all outspent their opponents, according to figures provided by the Virginia Public Access Project last week. The campaign reporting information is current through December 1, with the next filing deadline January 17.

In some cases, the victor outspent the loser by a factor of four or five to one. In one race the challenger spent more than 100 times more money than the loser!
