School Board chair vows to close budget gap

New school board chair Beth Hardy said last week the board will present a balanced budget to the board of supervisors when it finishes its work January 31, the projected date for approval of the schools budget.

“We are preparing a budget that will eliminate this,” said Hardy after last week’s four-hour meeting, referring to the more than $500,000 gap between projected revenue and expenditures.

Toward that end the board adopted a partial reorganization chart for schools administration that adds a second assistant school superintendent for operations but eliminates… Read more...

The Catholic monk in charge of the Mary Mother of the Church Abbey in Goochland County, which owns and operates Benedictine College Preparatory school, has been removed from the position pending the outcome of an investigation into an allegation of sexual misconduct.

The Rev. Luke Travers, a former headmaster of the elite Delbarton School in New Jersey, was removed from his role as the Virginia abbey’s canonical administrator Wednesday pending the outcome of the inquiry, said Hugh Anderson, president of the American Cassinese Congregation. Goochland residents sue to stop Benedictine move

A group of Goochland County residents has filed a lawsuit challenging the Board of Supervisors’ approval of a conditional-use permit to allow the former Benedictine High School to relocate to the rural county.

.

This announcement came after intense work by local and state officials to have the concerns of our residents heard.

Randolph student collects blankets to ‘Heat Up the Homeless for the Holidays’

Dallas Silva is in the third grade at Randolph Elementary School.

He will turn nine on Jan. 13, and he already understands that a person who can help others has an obligation to do so.

Several months ago, Dallas had an idea to do a toy drive to collect toys for kids living in shelters at Christmas.

“We talked about it, and then one day driving him to school, we started talking about how cold it was,” said his mother Sonda. “We decided then that instead of having a toy drive that we would concentrate on blankets. In fact, Dallas came up with the idea to… Read more...

It didn’t take long for the new Goochland Board of Supervisors to get a sense of the challenges they will face this year, as shortly after their organizational meeting last week, they heard Assessor Glenn Branham’s report on 2012 assessments.

Branham confirmed to the board a widely anticipated decline in assessments of taxable property in Goochland.

Compared to the previous year, assessments declined 4 percent, said Branham, to a total taxable value of $4,683,911,827. Assessments for 2011 had declined 3.8 percent.

“I went to Ms. Dickson to set up the tour,” said Creasey. “I thought the new board needed to see where the tax dollars were going.”
