Senate race for 12th heating up

In two months some local voters will choose their Republican candidate for Senate, and that primary race may well prove more exciting than the election.

State Sen. Walter A. Stosch and his challenger for the 12th District seat, Joseph E. Blackburn Jr., appeared together for the first time last week at a Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce-sponsored event.

The 12th senatorial district consists of western Henrico County, eastern Goochland County and a piece of Richmond.

Stosch, 70, the four-term Senate Majority Leader, is a certified public accountant from Henrico.… Read more...

Revamped village may shape the future of Manakin area

The Goochland Board of Supervisors unanimously approved six separate rezonings paving the way for a project that could change the complexion of the Manakin Village area.

Developer Bryce Powell requested the re-zonings on behalf of Midlothian Enterprises to initiate the first steps in a development project that combines commercial and residential components.

The 300-acre-plus project targets land bordered by Manakin Road and Patterson Avenue and bordered on the west by the Manakin Farms subdivision. Some of those residents, joined by residents of Hillside Estates, objected vehemently… Read more...

Richmonder walks through town on way to California

Route 6 in Goochland played host to an unusual sight last Tuesday.

Branch Clarke, 27, hiked from Crozier to Columbia on one of the first legs of his cross-country trek to San Francisco. He started from his late grandfather’s cottage in Virginia Beach on March 19.

Clarke, a 2003 VCU graduate and, most recently, a line cook at Joe’s Inn restaurant in Richmond, decided that he needed to figure out what to do with the rest of his life.

So he quit his job, handed his apartment over, and started planning the trip.

Clarke said he’d… Read more...

School Board looks at funds from county

Even after the Board of Supervisors increased the amount of funding for Goochland schools, the School Board didn’t know what to make of the turn of events last Tuesday night.

In reacting to the situation during its monthly meeting, the board expressed both appreciation and confusion at the way the system received an extra $65,000 for bus driver salaries — mainly because supervisors voted to move $25,000 from the administration portion of the school budget to transportation.

Seven days after hearing from the public on the proposed budget, the Board of Supervisors adopted… Read more...

Harris selected for All-State Chorus

Music has been a part of Casey Harris’ life for as long as she can remember. For the 17-year-old Goochland High School senior, it’s always been there. Be it playing or singing, Harris has made music a big part of who she is.

That’s one of the reasons Harris auditioned for All-District Chorus at L.C. Bird High School in February. She was chosen for that select group and later selected to All-State Chorus. Needless to say, she was excited to be chosen as one of the altos.

“Last year, as a junior, I auditioned and didn’t make it,” she said. “This… Read more...

Sharp, 60, has been chairman of the Goochland County-based retailer since 2002, when CarMax separated from former parent Circuit City Stores Inc.

“Rick carried the ball . . . with his foresight, enthusiasm… Read more...

The future is already here

Thirteen years ago the Goochland County Board of Supervisors created a special Commission On The Future, charged with looking 15 years ahead and developing a citizen-generated “vision” for Goochland County. In other words, what would the Commission see Goochland looking like by the year 2010?

When the Commission first met in the spring of 1994, the year 2010 looked like a long, long way off to me and probably the other 80 or so citizens who had volunteered to peer into their collective crystal balls and tell the Board the “vision” we had for Goochland 15 years… Read more...

Visit from above at GMS

Some visitors dropped in — literally — to pay Goochland Middle School students a visit last week when the University of Virginia Health System’s Pegasus helicopter landed at the school’s ball fields.

Pegasus is a hospital-based MedEvac helicopter that provides medical transport service to and from the hospital. The crew provides care to critically ill or badly injured patients.

The aircraft — an Augusta twin-engine, single-pilot, night vision-equipped 109E power helicopter — landed without a hitch.
Sean McCauley, a sixth grader, said… Read more...

World-class cyclists train in Goochland

If you’ve passed a colorful group of men on bicycles in the past couple weeks in Goochland it’s highly probable that they are some of the world’s best riders.

Every day for the past couple weeks members of the Rite Aid Pro Cycling Team have set out from team director Jon Wirsing’s home in Sandy Hook. Some days they ride 130 miles, others just 20. They’re here training for some of cycling’s biggest events.

$55 million budget adopted

A week after hearing from the public on the county’s budget and its proposed tax rates the Goochland Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday afternoon to adopt a $55.22 million budget.

Included in the appropriation are budgets for schools ($25.13 million), public safety ($5.97 million), and county administration ($3.373 million), among other departments.

As advertised, the approved budget will roll back the real estate tax rate from 64 cents to 53 cents per $100 of assessed value. The goal of the board had been to cut the rate to the point where residents would pay… Read more...
