School Board talks about GES

During its most recent workshop, the Goochland County School Board got its first look at different options in a potential expansion and renovation project at Goochland Elementary School.

Last Tuesday, the board heard from Jim McCalla with Moseley Architects regarding the pending project at GES, which the Board of Supervisors has signaled it would prefer versus building a new elementary school in central Goochland.

While going through the varying options, the board members were able to see composite renderings of what GES could look like. And they were also able to voice their opinions… Read more...

Atop his class, Stump is average teen

There’s a great deal of work that goes into being the head of the class. And Michael Stump, if you wouldn’t know better, appears to have done it while keeping a pretty calm, even-keeled demeanor.

Stump, 17, is Goochland High’s valedictorian this year. With a weighted grade point average of 4.7, he sits at the top of the class of 2008. And in that rareified air, he’ll be responsible for addressing his classmates Friday night.

But don’t hold your breath for a long, drawn out oratory from him.

“That’s just not my style,” he said… Read more...

Green ready, eager to head south

Stephanie Green applied to five colleges. And when it came down to the final analysis, Clemson University won out just about the same time she stepped on campus.

Green, 18, is the salutatorian of the class of 2008. And as such, she’ll be required to address her classmates. But graduation, while she said she sees it as a big deal, will be one more step towards her future.

“I’ve always liked change,” Green said. “And going to Clemson and leaving Goochland is one change I’m really looking forward to.”

One of John and Ruth Green’s… Read more...

Business neighbors find resolution

As they say, sometimes a little cooperation can go a long way. And for motorists and travelers on Va. Route 623 in Goochland, that is definitely true.
A partnership between business neighbors Luck Stone and 623 Landfill has made a potentially tough situation considerably better.

623 Landfill, a Republic Services, Inc. facility, contracted with Luck Stone for the drainage stone required for a new disposal cell.

And the two companies, realizing what the project would mean for Route 623, came together on a plan to share a boundary between the two properties.

Broadband response is impressive

To say that Goochland County residents surpassed expectations in a recent survey on broadband would be putting it mildly. A more appropriate description would be that county staff was “overwhelmed.”

In the recent survey, which was mailed out to roughly 3,000 households throughout the county, the consultants from CBG Communications, Inc. received more than 900, a 30 percent return-rate that, in the world of statistics and research, is outstanding.

“They thought that we’d be lucky if we got 10 percent of them back,” said the county’s director of… Read more...

Film is life-changing experience

Jacquelyn Pogue and Denise Dolan aren’t what one might expect when they think of Hollywood. But then again, neither is the Dalai Llama.

Regardless, that’s exactly what the pair have on their minds, having been a part of a documentary on the Dalai Lama that will be coming to Richmond June 1.
“It is a completely unique experience,” said Pogue, 66. “It’s a rare opportunity to see and be with the Dalai Lama.”

The Dalai Lama is a revered spiritual leader among Tibetans and heads the exiled government as well as being the world’s… Read more...

Goochland has region’s best wages

According to a report recently released by officials in Chesterfield, Goochland County has the state’s highest weekly wage.

The report lists Goochland as having an average weekly wage rate of $1,227. That’s higher than Henrico, Richmond, and Chesterfield.

While Goochland trails those three significantly in terms of population, it’s position is envied from a job-category standpoint, said Goochland’s director of economic development, Greg Reid.

“I think what you find is that while Goochland isn’t as large as those other localities, we still… Read more...

Bringing a drive-in theater to you

Imagine being able to go to the movies without the 25-minute trek to Short Pump. Imagine watching a movie with your family and not having just paid an arm and a leg for snacks and drinks. Now, imagine doing all of that from the comfort of your own car.

John and Kristina Heidel want to bring that dream to a big screen near you, so to speak.

The Heidels are actively searching for a place to open the Goochland Drive-In. With a deep belief in the magic of movies, the two are hoping to bring a piece of Americana back to Goochland.

Schools hire Gretz to fill vacant post

Don’t blame Peter Gretz if he feels like he just won the lottery because, in many ways, one could argue that he did just that.
Gretz, the 39-year-old director of instruction and testing in Buckingham County, was hired last week to fill the vacant assistant superintendent’s position for Goochland County Public Schools.

The position has been vacant since current superintendent Dr. Linda Underwood was hired last August. Underwood, who served as the assistant for four years prior to Dr. Frank Morgan’s departure last summer, is thrilled to have been able to hire Gretz.
