Goochland County considers new government setup

Could Goochland County become the second municipality in the state to adopt a county-manager form of government?

Some Goochland leaders want to at least explore the change, which would eliminate the constitutional offices of treasurer and commissioner of the revenue and create a Department of Finance instead.

At a strategy session last week, Supervisor James W. Eads endorsed the change and suggested that many of the county’s recent fiscal failures might have been avoided under the simpler structure.

“God knows we’ve been through agony,” he said,… Read more...

Annette Thompson trial on animal neglect charges delayed until Aug. 2

Pet Foundation operator Annette Thompson’s trial for inadequate animal care has been delayed once again.

Thompson’s attorney Darwin Satterwhite and private prosecutor Heidi Meinzer of Arlington both requested the continuance. The new trial date is set for August 2 at 2 p.m.

Meinzer told General District Judge Edward Carpenter that she had decided to drop five of the charges, leaving nine cases still to be tried.

All the charges are Class IV misdemeanors, punishable by a maximum penalty of a $250 fine each.

The charges stem from an investigation by an ad… Read more...

Cooling assistance available for those who qualify

Thirty-two Goochland households have gotten help from the Goochland Department of Social Services in dealing with the recent unseasonably hot weather, according to Director Kimberly Jefferson.

Temperatures hit the 100 degree mark several days in a row last week. Although the weekend brought some cooler temperatures, hot weather is expected to return this week.

The elderly, the very young and those with chronic health conditions are especially susceptible to extreme heat.

Jefferson said no one has called social services looking for cooling centers, such as those that have… Read more...

Goochland County celebrates July 4

Mike Jarrell and his family had staked out their spot in plenty of time to see the annual Goochland Fourth of July fireworks display.

“We’ve got the quick exit out,” said Jarrell, District Fire Chief at Company 2 in Crozier, as he sat with wife Michaelann and sons Preston and Max outside the fence around the old high school football field.

Only a few people were there as early as the Jarrells, but by 9 p.m. a steady stream of arrivals had swelled the crowd considerably.

“We’re expecting a good turnout,” said Parks and Recreation Director… Read more...

Campalooza!  teaches Goochland kids farming skills

About 30 day campers got to meet a two-day old day calf last Thursday.

And each one was invited to take a turn feeding it.

Aged five through eight, the campers were members of the six-week long Campapalooza! Day Camp, presented by Goochland County Parks and Recreation and the Virginia Cooperative Extension 4-H.

Campapalooza! is the second of six day camp experiences offered this summer by Parks and Rec and the Extension Service.

“I’ve done that before,” said Ivy Flory after holding the formula for the calf.

But other campers had never seen… Read more...

The 25th Batteau Festival at Maidens Landing

Those long, flat-bottomed boats began pulling into Maidens Landing last Saturday afternoon shortly after 4 p.m., marking the end of the twenty-fifth annual James River Batteau Festival.

“It was a little harder this year,” said Sandy Shortridge, whose husband Bob captained the first boat to arrive: Dreaming Creek, which is actually a gondola and not a bateau.

Sandy said she liked the flood year, when the swift current carried the boats along.

Shortly after Dreaming Creek arrived, Captain Robert M. “Buddy” High and the Brunswick Belle pulled into sight.

Principals at Goochland Elementary, Randolph Elementary switch roles

The principals of Goochland Elementary School and Randolph Elementary School will be switching positions for the upcoming school year.

This decision, and how it was made, has angered parents who feel that Superintendent Linda S. Underwood and the school board did not clearly explain how the reassignment will benefit the 700 students involved.

In an interview on Monday Underwood said that Dianna Gordon, principal of GES, and Stacey Austin, principal of RES, have each been at their respective schools for about six years.

“We know that both principals are highly thought… Read more...

Goochland County Planning Commission will vote on electronic signs

Goochland may soon be getting its words out via electronic message signs, if an amended ordinance is passed in August.

At their June meeting, Planning and Zoning Commission members discussed whether these signs should be permitted, and what they should look like if they are.

Citing signs in nearby counties, Director of Planning Bob Hammond said, “Electronic message signs are the new vogue in terms of signage in the area, and the Board of Supervisors wanted the Planning Commission to address this issue.”

The ordinance proposed by county staff would consolidate… Read more...
