Board of Supervisors hears county departments’ budget requests The Goochland Board of Supervisors held its first round of budget hearings Jan. 19 as 14 department heads presented their individual budget requests. Sheriff James Agnew said his office needs more people. He indicated a need for more supervisors and manpower to provide increased patrol coverage. The sheriff also said he was requesting the purchase of six new vehicles this year and six more in FY2014. School Board tries new kind of public hearing The Goochland School Board opened up its budget process last week by holding its first ever interactive budget work session. “We believe this is the first time anything like this has happened In Goochland County,” said board chair Beth Hardy. “This is an experiment.” Interested citizens could speak without signing up before hand and, when possible, got immediate feedback from the board and the superintendent. Planning Commission delays action on multi-family zoning Goochland’s planning commissioners put the brakes on creating new zoning to allow multi-family residences in the county, deferring action on two ordinance amendments and recommending that the board of supervisors not act on another but refer it back to the planning commission after further study. All votes were 9-0 with Commissioner Lowe Lunsford not in attendance. Board of Supervisors asks for Planning Commission resignations The Goochland County Board of Supervisors has requested the resignations of all 10 members of the county Planning Commission. In a letter sent via email and regular mail dated Jan. 23, 2012, the supervisors requested each member of the planning commission resign and submit a letter of resignation to county administrator Rebecca T. New Goochland Democratic Chair plans on rebuilding the party Just elected, the new chair of the Democratic Party hopes to expand the number of the party faithful in Goochland County. That’s why Molly Payne was busy stirring up a pot of chili last Friday evening, preparing for the next day’s meeting at the Company 5 Firehouse. She took over the leadership of the local Democratic Committee last month, replacing former chair Alan Tucker. Goochland woman celebrates 100th Birthday Ms. Eleanor Parrish celebrated her 100th birthday recently, and she still lives an active life, residing at Envoy at The Meadows. Ms. Parrish, along with three other children, was born to Maggie and Wilmer Parrish and was raised in Goochland County. She walked to Hebron School through grade 7 and graduated from Cardwell High School in 1931. Her father was a farmer and her mother a hard working wife and mother. Maguire enjoying life after brain tumor surgery University of Virginia freshman and Goochland High School graduate Adam Maguire will celebrate an unusual anniversary Feb. 2. The date will mark one-year since having a brain tumor about the size of a small orange removed. While he has recovered and shows no outward signs of what he went through, the tumor did cost him an appointment to the Naval Academy. “When they called me about withdrawing the appointment, they said I had been medically disqualified because of the surgery,” Maguire said Jan. 13 while sitting in the lobby of the Goochland Family YMCA. “They… Read more...

Student hoping to bring Legal Aid Day to Goochland Goochland High School senior Brian Thomas Lapkin hopes to leave a legacy behind when he graduates. It would be a legacy of a free Legal Aid Day for those needing legal advice who can’t afford it. Lapkin, working with the Central Virginia Legal Aid Society and Goochland Family Services, has set the date for the first such legal clinic for Jan. 28 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at the American Legion building at 3386 River Road West near Goochland High School.
