Three planning commissioners will not resign

Two more members of the Goochland County Planning Commission have decided not to honor the request of the Board of Supervisors and resign.

In a letter sent via email and regular mail Feb. 3, 2012, to County Administrator Rebecca T. Dickson, Planning Commission Chair Courtney Hyers from District 5 and James P. Atkinson from District 1, joined Ty Querry from District 2, who said last week he would not resign, in announcing their decisions.

School board passes balanced budget

After meeting every week in January, the Goochland School Board last night passed a balanced budget for fiscal year 2013. The vote was unanimous.

The budget assumes a $17,386,626 transfer from the county. The total operating fund expenditures and revenues balance out at $23,624,799.

“It’s been a long, difficult, gut-wrenching four weeks,” said school board chair Beth Hardy after the vote. Hardy emphasized that there could be further tweaks in the process going forward if more savings are found. She said the focus was on classrooms and students and establishing… Read more...

Police Academy sign-up ends Feb. 13

The Goochland County Sheriff’s Office will be holding the Spring 2012 Sheriff’s Citizens’ Academy starting on February 22nd. Come learn about the Sheriff’s Office and participate in some very interesting classes. Planning commission future up in the air

The Goochland County Planning Commission could see a lot of change between now and Friday as the clock ticks on a request by the board of supervisors to have all 10 members of the commission resign no later than Feb. 3.

In a letter to each of the commissioners dated Jan. 23, the supervisors asked that the resignations be effective April 1, 2012, to give the supervisors time to amend the county code to restructure the planning commission and to appoint new members in April.

Goochland Chamber holds annual meeting

Goochland’s Chamber of Commerce held their annual dinner meeting last Thursday at Hermitage Country Club.

Dubbed “Big Time Stars – Small Town Heroes,” the highlight of the evening was a talk by keynote speaker Richard Verlander on his and his wife Kathy’s experiences raising one of the most successful major league pitchers in history, their son, Justin Verlander.

Window to register with FEMA for earthquake damage closes next month

If you live in Goochland County and your home or business suffered damage from the Aug. 23, 2011, earthquake, you can still register for financial assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

In order to register for a FEMA grant, property must have been damaged in the initial earthquake Aug. 23, 2011, or in one of the subsequent aftershocks through Oct. 25, 2011.

More than just an afternoon stroll

Anne Morrissette is going for a walk in July. It’s going to last about 10 days and cover between 150 to 200 miles.

In the Northern Frontier District of Kenya.

Morrissette, a frequent patron of the Goochland Family YMCA, said she was recruited by Elk Hill School Director Michael Farley to take part in this year’s Proper Walk, which is the largest fundraiser for the Makindu Children’s Program (MCP), a 501c-3 supporting the Makindu Children’s Centre (MCC). Goochland man faces drug charges in Henrico incident

Henrico County authorities investigating the shooting death of a 22-year-old man last week have made an arrest related to the case.

Funeral services were held today for Dreshaun Antonio Travis of the 800 block of Willomet Lane in Henrico. Travis’ death has been listed as a homicide by the state medical examiner’s office; he was shot in the chest.

School Board holds budget public hearing

The Goochland School Board held its official public hearing on the budget Tuesday night, in preparation for a planned vote to approve a budget next Tuesday, Jan. 31.

Just five speakers came to the mike to address the board after Goochland School Superintendent Linda Underwood’s budget presentation, the latest version of a continually changing plan as the board and school administration attempt to balance revenue and spending.

The proposal to outsource custodial jobs proved to be the most controversial topic Tuesday evening.

Quiet man leads supervisors

In his characteristic quiet voice, new board of supervisors chairman Ned Creasey last Friday described the life journey that brought him to leadership in Goochland after an historic local election.

Born 68 years ago in Maryland, he grew up with his mom and dad and one sister in McDonough County in Illinois, about 90 miles west of Peoria. It was no Chicago.

“It’s a little different down state,” he recalls.
