Goochland barn tour to benefit retired race horses

What happens to a thoroughbred racehorse when he can no longer run competitive times on the racetrack?

Well, the animal could end up at a Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF) site like Greener Pastures, a TRF Second Chances Program at the James River Work Center.

Or it could find itself in the slaughterhouse.

To raise money to make alternative first option more likely, a tour of some of the most interesting horse barns in Goochland is scheduled for later this month.

Set for Sunday, September 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the tour will feature five unique barns in… Read more...

Goochland landmark gone

On August 2 Richard Costanzo was driving to work when he realized that one of Goochland’s historic landmarks was no longer standing: Men were razing the damaged remains of what was once a general store at the corner of Genito and Cardwell Roads.

Heavily damaged by a thunderstorm earlier this month, the building was unsafe, said owner Larry Page.

“Half of the tin roof blew off and landed on a neighbor’s property,” said Page.

Page added that after the storm damaged the building it was structurally unsound.

“When we first moved there we… Read more...

Electronic signs stir controversy in Goochland

Is there another sign controversy on Goochland’s horizon?

Probably not.

The Goochland Planning Commission considered a measure last week that would allow limited electronic signage in the county.

There seemed little support for the new ordinance, and commissioners agreed to take the matter up again in 60 days.

Goochland’s Director of Planning Bob Hammond told the planning board that neighboring counties have differing views on the limitations of the evolving electronic signage trend.

Most rural areas do not allow scrolling of messages and most… Read more...

Goochland YMCA’s Tender Tots program begins

The Goochland YMCA’s new Tender Tots program is starting this fall with 23 children enrolled.

YMCA Program Director Jan Kenney said an Open House was held last Thursday at the Goochland Specialty Center.

Key to making the program work has been the help the YMCA has received from the Goochland Rotary Club and YMCA members Shannon and Tommy Allen.

The Rotary Club donated $1,000 toward start up costs for the program and put a fresh coat of paint on the walls of the Specialty Center, said Kenney.

Kenney was especially appreciative of the Allens’ donation.
