Dog helps kids learn

Sporting a pair of thick black lensless glasses, Bonzo, a certified therapy dog owned by Dave Dilzer, listened as five-year-old Baleria Balderson read to him last week at the Goochland library.

Baleria’s three-year-old sister Gisella sat close by. During a break Gisella, who has not started reading yet, showed Bonzo some pictures from another book.

“It’s a non-threatening way for children to practice reading,” said Library Assistant Eileen Ford, describing the Read Books with Bonzo program, now in its second year at the library.

“I think it’s… Read more...

Supervisors vote to increase tax rate

Supervisors voted 4-1 in favor of advertising a real estate tax increase of up to 4 cents.

Goochland supervisors voted this week to advertise possible increases to the county’s tax and utility rates.

Revenue generated from higher rates would prevent the county from making deeper cuts to a recommended budget for 2011, one that, at $40.5 million, is already 7.3 percent lower than the current year’s plan.

Contributing to the budget’s decline is the county’s falling revenues: Real estate taxes, which are the county’s largest source of income, fell… Read more...

GEPA, GCPS clash on budget reductions

The Goochland Education Parents Association, or GEPA, believes that a recent e-mail sent by School Superintendent Linda A. Underwood misrepresents the group’s agenda.

Last week Underwood sent an e-mail entitled “the battle is on” to Athletic Director Bryan Gordon and his wife, Goochland Elementary School principal Diane Gordon, writing, “Any way that any of the athletic boosters might be riled up enough to speak out at school board or supervisors meetings? GEPA has added elimination of the athletic director to their hit list.”

The e-mail was sent as… Read more...

New film documents Massive Resistance throughout Virginia

About 50 participants came to Goochland High School Sunday to take part in a community dialogue about a pivotal era in Virginia race relations.

Half a century ago, despite the U.S. Supreme Court’s historic 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education decision which ruled “separate but equal” school systems unconstitutional, most of the state’s schools were still segregated by race.

Massive Resistance, a strategy devised by the state to interpose itself between the federal government and the order to desegregate, was Virginia’s response.

Cities and counties… Read more...

Tax increase considered to balance Goochland County’s proposed 2011 budget

County Administrator Rebecca Dickson presented her recommended 2011 budget of $40.5 million at a workshop session of the Board of Supervisors last Tuesday.

The proposed plan is down 7.3 percent from this year’s operating budget of $43.7 million, and the county is still facing a budget shortfall of nearly $1.5 million for next year.

Real estate taxes, which fell 8.2 percent this year and are expected to decline an additional four percent next year, are the county’s largest source of income, said Dickson.

There is little to no growth expected in the county’s… Read more...

Many of us have heard of Google Earth, a project that uses satellite imagery to show, in vivid detail, places from all over the world.

Now Google Earth viewers can also see an enhanced version of the Goochland Courthouse area.

That’s because students in Kimberly Berry’s two Digital Visualization classes at Goochland High School spent hours photographing, measuring and modeling structures in three dimensions for inclusion in the Google Earth Map.

It was part of Berry’s G21 project, which encourages students to learn 21st century skills, with emphasis on… Read more...
