Former school employee gets suspended sentence in drug case

Former Goochland County Public Schools employee Glenn Worrell was sentenced on July 22 to three months in jail, all time suspended for five years.

Last May, Worrell, who was an HVAC technician for the schools, pleaded guilty to possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute, a class five felony.

Worrell was arrested Sept. 4, 2008, after the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) found marijuana in a common room of his home as well as in other locations on the property.

Goochland student shot and killed in Richmond

From Media General reports — A man died early yesterday after being shot in the vicinity of 14th and Hull streets, according to Richmond police. Officers patrolling that area yesterday heard gunshots and started searching the area. About 4:40 a.m., in the First block of East 14th Street, they found a male with gunshot wounds. The victim, identified as Darius Alphonzo Athey, 19, of the 2200 block of Chapel Hill Road in Goochland County, was taken to VCU Medical Center, where he later died. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.

C&F Bank robbed in Goochland

On the morning of May 27, the C&F Bank Branch in Goochland County was robbed by two males.

The men were driving an older model dark green Buick with rust on top of the vehicle and a “Support the Troops” sticker over the right rear passenger wheel.

As one man stood lookout at the front doors of the bank, a second man approached the teller and presented a note demanding cash. He lifted his jacket to display a handgun tucked into his belt. The men left with an undisclosed amount of cash.

At 10:05 this morning, the C&F Bank Branch in Goochland County was robbed by two black males. .

Escapees found in Northern Virginia

Two escapees who made their way out of a low level security correctional facility in Goochland over the weekend were captured Tuesday afternoon.

David Michael Corbin, 25, and Joseph Troy Gray, 21, fled from the James River Work Center, which is located off Route 6 in Goochland, around 9:45 p.m. Saturday.

The two were taken into custody without incident in the Springfield area of Northern Virginia by the Virginia Department of Corrections.

Bank robber caught after chase

A Chester man is in custody for the robbery of the Bank of Goochland April 2 at 1:45 pm.

Cecil Justin Barker, 28, was apprehended after a high-speed chace from Goochland County to Albemarle County.

According to Sheriff James Agnew, the incident began this afternoon when a man wearing a hooded gray sweat shirt burst through the front door of the Bank of Goochland in Goochland Courthouse.  After displaying what appeared to be a semi automatic handgun, the man ordered bank employees to lie on the floor.

The Goochland County Sheriff’s Department credits heightened scrutiny by teachers and sheriff’s deputies for the arrests of three Goochland High School students during three different incidents this week:

On Feb. 18 a 16-year-old male student was discovered by a teacher in a vacant classroom preparing to light a pipe holding what appeared to be marijuana. This evidence was turned over to the School Resource Officer (SRO).

Beating of neighbor nets man 10 years

A man accused of beating a Goochland County woman nearly to death last year was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Sept.30.

Irvin Leroy “Chubby” Martin, 47, was convicted in July for an attack that fractured the skull of former Gum Spring neighbor Missy Riley the morning of Feb. 5, 2007. In a non-jury trial, Circuit Judge Timothy K. Sanner also convicted him of stealing Riley’s van, setting it on fire and stealing another vehicle in an escape that eventually led him out of state as a fugitive for months.

Charge certified against lawyer

On Sept. 22 a local judge certified to a grand jury the embezzlement case against a lawyer accused of stealing from the Virginia Farm Bureau while he was working there.

Lawrence H. Bidwell, 49, appeared in Goochland County General District Court and agreed to a statement read by the prosecutor saying that he used a $30,000 check to the Farm Bureau to pay an $18,000 personal debt.

The theft charge against Bidwell, who lived in Farmville, is slated to go before a Goochland grand jury scheduled to meet Oct. 14.

Richmond man shot dead in Goochland

An intruder was shot and killed in Goochland County after he allegedly entered into an unlocked house trailer and struggled with the homeowner
Shortly after 3 a.m. on July 25, Goochland sheriff’s deputies responded to the 2300 block of Grape Ridge Court after Adam Stone, 30, the homeowner, called to report that he had shot a man with a shotgun after the man broke into his mobile home and entered the bedroom where he and his girlfriend were sleeping.
