The Goochland YMCA’s new Tender Tots program is starting this fall with 23 children enrolled.

YMCA Program Director Jan Kenney said an Open House was held last Thursday at the Goochland Specialty Center.

Key to making the program work has been the help the YMCA has received from the Goochland Rotary Club and YMCA members Shannon and Tommy Allen.

The Rotary Club donated $1,000 toward start up costs for the program and put a fresh coat of paint on the walls of the Specialty Center, said Kenney.

Kenney was especially appreciative of the Allens’ donation.

“They have a passion for giving back to their community and making a difference in the lives of others. They gave a contribution in the amount of $8,000 that enabled the Goochland Y to provide assistance through our “Open to All” financial assistance program that allows anyone to enroll in programs regardless of their ability to pay,” said Kenney.

The Goochland Family YMCA stepped in to take over the Tender Tots program when financial pressure led to the elimination of the 27-year-old program from the Goochland Schools most recent budget.

The program serves 3 to 5-year old children with full and half-day programs Monday through Friday. There is also a three-day Tuesday through Thursday option. The program uses a comprehensive academic curriculum to prepare children for kindergarten.

Kenney said the YMCA Tender Tots program will also continue to provide Goochland High School students in the Early Childhood Development Program with the opportunity to complete their training.

I cannot begin to express my appreciation to the Y for “picking up the ball” with the Tender Tots program, or my excitement for the energy they have brought to it’s operations. From the moment Jay Shively and Jan Kenney made their presentation to the School Board regarding the Y’s offer to take over the program, I knew the Rotary Club of Goochland needed to be of service to help with the endeavor.

Education is a core value of Rotary International, and studies have shown that the greatest impact of education is in the earliest phases of a child’s life. It is our great honor to be able to help the Y’s efforts in this arena.

Towards that end, the Rotary Club of Goochland has applied for a grant from Rotary District 7600 in order to further help provide financial support for the program. Those grants are awarded later in the fall, but I’m sure they will still be of service to this valuable program.

All the best to the Y, Jan & Jay, and the teachers, parents and students of the Tender Tots program!
