On July 17 Gov. Timothy M. Kaine announced that more than $1 million in Safe Routes to School funding would be awarded to 13 school systems, local governments and not-for-profit groups across the Commonwealth.
Goochland received $10,170 to develop and implement Safe Routes to School programs, including crossing guard training, participation encouragement and safety education.
What is Safe Routes to School funding meant to achieve?
The governor’s office is hoping to encourage children in grades K-8 to walk or bicycle to school.
According to a press release, Governor Kaine said, “Walking and biking to school offers a host of benefits to students, communities and the environment. We want to encourage alternative means of transportation for Virginians of all ages, and these grants will help ensure that our children can get to school safely by foot or bike.”
Safe Routes to School is a statewide program and is funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration.
“Goochland County Public Schools is very excited about being a part of this grant and working hand-in-hand with the county to bring this to our area. Through the diligent grassroots effort, led by Heather Earley, of a select few, we were awarded a program grant for roughly $10,000.
“The funds will be used to raise the level or awareness about the importance of walking and biking in the Courthouse area. Promoting healthy living through walking and biking coincides with our sense of true community and service, helping to make set our children on a healthy path,” said Brad Franklin, Research and Information Services Analyst for Goochland County Schools.
