Having learned its lesson when an overflow crowd forced members to move outside last month at the Goochland Library, the Goochland Tea Party held its second meeting last Thursday in the Goochland High School auditorium.

“I’m here because of love of country and love of God,” said Ed Spicer when asked why he showed up. Spicer bought three Goochland Tea Party T- shirts from Larry Eggleston and Keith Flannagan, who manned a table with Tea Party items for sale just inside the auditorium.

Paul Yates of Rockcastle, who came with his wife Joyce, said he was interested in “restoring fiscal and constitutional sanity.”

“The more demonized we are the more committed we become,” said Yates.

As folks got seated Dennis Uselmann warmed up the crowd with several patriotic songs. Then Hadensville’s Susan Lascolette kicked off the 7 p.m. gathering by introducing WRVA Radio talk show host Doc Thompson.

Thompson talked about his recent comments on his afternoon radio show, lambasting Gov. Robert McDonnell’s decision to use part of a $22 million surplus to give state workers a one-time bonus.

Citing one state worker who emailed him, Thompson said he told him if he wasn’t making enough, “You can always get another job.”

“It’s the attitude that you deserve a raise” that bothers him, said Thompson.

Thompson also said he favored total tax reform.

“Many times the things I say would be detrimental to me,” he said, but stressed that consistency when advocating cutting government spending was essential.

“You’ve got to be consistent. If we are consistent it will transfer to those we elect,” he said.

Next to the podium was Jeffrey Spence, who said he changed his prepared speech to counter recent charges by the NAACP that the Tea Party movement is racist.

“I consider prejudice a cancer,” said Spence.

“I am proud to live in a country where we have elected our first president of color, even if I disagree with him,” said Spence. “We have come a long way.”

Spence, who called himself both a “recovering Democrat and a recovering Republican,” called the U.S. Constitution “the closest thing to scripture written by man.”

Spence said the Tea Party movement grew out of the anti-health care movement and maintained that the actual numbers of uninsured is more like 15 million when including illegal aliens, those who are insured by choice and those who haven’t taken advantage of programs for which they are eligible.

“I ask the busybodies of politics to leave us alone,” said Spence, decrying the growth of the “nanny state,” which he maintained could provide only the “illusion of safety” and not the real thing.

Spence made clear who the boss in the country is in his political view.

“The president, the congress, the Supreme Court – they are the hired help,” thundered Spence, to enthusiastic applause.

“They work for us; we don’t work for them.”

“More government always means less freedom,” said the third speaker, Richmond Tea Party head Jaime Radtke.

Radtke said she was “incredibly encouraged” by current political trends.

“We are relearning our history,” she said, drawing a parallel with the prophet Nehemiah, who exhorted the people to rebuild the walls around Jerusalem, one section at a time.

Just like the foundations of the destroyed walls of Jerusalem, Radtke said, “our foundation in the country is still strong.”

“The real growth is at the local level,” said Radtke, exhorting the crowd to take part.

“If it is not us in this room today, who is it going to be?” she asked. “If not now, when?”

Lascolette wound up the meeting asking the crowd to sign up for a number of committees and listed upcoming Tea Party events, including an October Virginia Tea Party Convention.

our country is doomed to be third world if manufacturing does not return . you simply cannot import more than you export . plain and simple . if you import more your wealth is sent to other countries . when applied to a nation the size of China it doesnt take a economics major to realize how fast they can take all our money .
  anyone who says we cannot compete should not be elected . i know how hard and smart our people work . to say we cant manufacture competively is not true .
  we need laws protecting our wealth . imports and exports must be the same . no country shall export more to the USA than we export to them . call it what you want but it is the only way to protect our wealth .
  only this will fix our country . you can cry about everything you want but no manufacturing equals a third world country .

Level Headed Republican of Maidens, Va  |  Jul. 26, 2010, 04:47 PM

I am Republican but I can’t get the taste of hypocrisy out of my mouth.  I listen to republican after republican in Goochland talk how the government should not give handouts, or how the government shouldn’t raise taxes for unnecessary reasons but I look at most of these people and ask “Are you not reaping the benefits of tax breaks?”  Property taxes are 1/2 for senior citizens.  Property taxes are 1/2 for farmers.  Farmers don’t pay sales tax.  In what other business is this the case.  I agree that we shouldn’t increase taxes but it seems too many people are talking about not increasing taxes while holding their hand out for breaks at the same time.

The problem is that the people in power and our congress don’t care about the people and what is best for the them, all they care about is their party be it Republican or Democratic.  I agree that the last thing we need is a another party, but people also need to get off their butts and start working for what they have an not expecting the government to give it to them.  Why do receipients of welfare get free cell phones?  Not just phones that dial 911, but phones with actual minutes.  They should only get a 911 phone.  Welfare has become a way of life and not just stepping stone for those that have fallen on bad times.  Extended unemployment is a joke.  Especially when you know there are qualified workers out there, and they won’t apply for jobs because they are COMFORTABLE sitting at home collecting unemployment.  Not all people fall into this, but we are so busy giving away what the hard working americans are making and paying in taxes, that those still working would be better off not working and collecting from the gvmt.  Jefferson, Washington and the rest of those that helped form this country are rolling in their graves at what we are doing!!

The Truth Teller of Goochland  |  Jul. 26, 2010, 03:30 AM

The problem is no matter what the party is called, Republican or Democrat, they are basically the same.  There needs to be a viable third party option.  A party which does not want to create of an all powerful federal government (Democrats) and one which does not want to create an all powerful state government (Republicans).  Somewhere along the way individual liberty was lost and then trampled on by both parties.

The Tea Party contradicts virtually all of what it says it represents by not advocating for a third party and all they will say about it is “we do not feel it would be beneficial.”  Giving the people as many choices as possible is always beneficial.  You cannot tout you’re supposed belief in free markets on one hand and then pigeon hole the nation into voting Republican or Democrat with the other.  This obvious deception is the Achilles heel of the Tea Party and not giving the people credit for being able to see through it is just plain insulting.

@ F.J. Watson:  The tea parties are OPPOSITE of the nanny state.  One of our foremost values is limited government.  We want all unnecessary government out of our lives.  We don’t want big governement of any kind.

We think that too much government is at the root of America’s problems today.  Too much government power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. We need to let the states handle everything except the specific powers given to the federal government in the constitution (“enumerated powers”).

Let’s get the government back to the state level where individuals will have a better chance of influencing the results.

I disagree that “overpopulation makes big government necessary for an individual’s survival”.  We need to free people by lowering their taxes, lowering regulations, decreasing spending.

It’s all about taking personal responsbility for one’s own actions.

F. J. Watson  |  Jul. 25, 2010, 11:33 AM

Everyone in our Mad Hatter party still misses the point, which is why I finally left it.

It’s not bigger government that limits freedom.

It’s population.

One person per one hundred square miles has more freedom than one hundred people living within a single square mile.

Overpopulation makes big government necessary for an individual’s survival.  (Stop lights, speed limits, laws against child pornography, etc.)

But… people keep exorcising their right to have more kids.  And they keep complaining about the loss of freedom they are themselves causing.

And blaming their government for not fixing the problem.

So, in a way, the Tea Party represents the perfect example of people wanting and demanding a “nanny government”—but they insist their nanny stop being so mean!

And let them have ice cream.

:/

The Goochland Tea Party believes in:

* Constitutional adherence

* Limited government

* Fiscal responsibility

* Free markets

* Virtue and Accountability

It appears that we are in agreement on many principles and values.

We are also in agreement on not creating a third party – we do not feel that would be beneficial.

Tea parties are not political parties.  Our members are not Obama haters. They are not propagandists.

Tea parties are aimed at fundamentally changing our government by evaluating and electing candidates of all political parties who share our values.  And then, we have to watch them to be sure that they behave in ways compatible with the values they espoused when they got elected!  This is a critical step that most Americans (myself included) have neglected in the past.  This is where the virtue and accountability come into play.

Consider the hundreds of constitutional study groups, books about and by our founders flying off the shelves, the political discourse, the 1000-fold increase in citizen contacts with legislators, the interest and increased knowledge of our citizens.  The tea parties can take a lot of credit for this phenomenon.  It is a wonderful thing for citizens to become more informed, more engaged, and more hopeful that we can truly make a difference that will improve our lives and the lives of our children and grandchildren.

The days of voting for someone just because of the letter after their name are over for good.  We the People deserve better and we are organizing together to accomplish that mission.

I have tried to have a reasonable discussion about the mission of the
Goochland Tea Party but I think it is unfortunate that some of the comments made denigrates your fellow citizens and calls them by a vile name and calls them “a fly by night splintering network of thieves”. Name-calling never trumps peaceful public discourse.  Upon further reflection, I am sure that you would not want such non-Christian and ugly things said about you and I ask that everyone refrain from this type of language as we work together to improve our lives.

Republican In Hiding of Goochland  |  Jul. 23, 2010, 10:32 AM

What a Joke…Tea Party in Goochland?  The Tea Party is just a hustle; it is all about getting us to spend money on their propaganda material.  Hell I’m mad we lost the election to Democrats, but I not going to destroy our party by splitting our base into a third party!  Can’t you see this is what the Democrats want!!!!  So we had two lousy candidates for the 2008 elections, why can’t we learn from our mistakes and go back to basics…support two qualified candidates that truly believe in small government, tax cuts , and a free enterprising capital system!  If we stand on our Christian Conservative principles we will gain control of the both house and the president in 2012.  These rogue elements, The Tea Party and The Birthers are destroying our party and most of us are sitting by and allowing this to happen!  As a Conservative Christian Republican I urge us to unite as Republicans.  We must accept defeat and go out and start organizing for 2012!  Don’t be hustle out your money for fly by night splintering network of thieves.  Let’s come together with real conservative solutions to reduce our growing debt and get away from all this paranoia for the extreme right of our party!

Trust me in the end, all this unnecessary socialist propaganda and paranoia will back fire on us!  …Sorry Tea Baggers, I’m not that STUPID in believing a black man from Chicago has the power to change our Constitution and convert our society to socialism!  Don’t try to sell it to me, because I not buying!  Stand and support Christian Conservative Principles and the Republican Party, Together we will rise…separate we will definitely fall!
