Children in costumes. Arts and crafts. A steady amount of sunshine with a good breeze. All staples of a fall festival.

And last weekend’s Centerville Pumpkin Festival was right on the money, according to organizer Mary Andrews.

“We had a great turnout and it was a huge success,” she said. “I think everybody who came and all of the vendors were very happy.”

According to Andrews, the second annual festival had between 1,700 and 2,000 attendees.

“That’s bigger than last year,” she said. “This year was bigger and better, for sure.”

Andrews added that an estimated third of the attendees were children, who took advantage of the festival’s atmosphere.

“The kids, many of them dressed up, really got to take part in a lot of activities,” she said.

In addition to the games, arts and crafts, the festival, located at 33 Broad Street Road, also raffled off an oversized pumpkin.

The gigantic pumpkin, weighing in at 200 pounds, was donated by Grandma’s Pumpkins of Dinwiddie. All raffle sales went to aid the local fire station, which had members and trucks on hand, Andrews said.

The Halloween-themed event will stay in place for as long as the property is available, Andrews said.

“We hope to be back next year and keep raising the bar,” she added.
