Close to 120 runners of all ages showed up for the second annual Goochland CASA 5K fundraising run at West Creek last Saturday, said Court Appointed Special Advocate Association Program Director Geri Venable.

“I’m surprised that so many people are showing up in the rain,” she said.

Held in an on-and-off drizzle, the run raised about $2,000 for the agency.

CASA volunteers work as advocates for abused and neglected children caught up in the legal and social service system, providing support until these kids are placed in permanent homes.

Richmond Roadrunners member Rob Astrop, who served as race director, explained that the cool temperatures and light rain were a plus for the runners.

“When you see the spectators all bundled up in jackets you know it’s a great day for the runners,” he said.

David Neal took first place with a time of 17:05.

“It’s not what I wanted,” he said, indicating he expected to break 17 minutes.

Nici Thomas was the first place women’s finisher.

Participants included a team from Elk Hill School and one from the Community Services Board.

Seventy-one-year old Buddy Pittman ran while pushing his grandson Henry, 2, in a stroller. His time was 56:02.

Runners started and finished at the Farm Bureau Building in West Creek Office Park, with Goochland Sheriff’s Deputies controlling traffic for safety.

Bagels, cream cheese, bananas and water awaited the runners at the finish line.

Eleven-year-old Brandon Miller chomped down on a bagel after turning in a 25:25 effort. A student at Goochland Middle School, he said he runs with the Goochland High School track and cross country teams.

The top three male and female open winners each received cash awards in the amounts of $100, $75 and $50.

“I think we did okay, I’m happy with it,” said Venable, who expressed thanks to the 30 or so volunteers who got up at 6 a.m. to set up the event.

“We plan on making it a regular Goochland event and hope it grows each year,” she said.
