Derick Kevin Hewlett escaped from police custody Monday as he was being processed at the Goochland County magistrate’s office.

On Monday afternoon, Hewlett, 30, illegally pulled into a crossover off of Interstate 64 near the 173 exit in Goochland. He was driving a 1996 silver Chevy Lumina.

A state trooper tried to question Hewlett, who took off onto I-64 eastbound. A pursuit was suspended when police lost track of Hewlett’s car.

Authorities then received a call that a car had crashed into a wooded area along Roundfield Lane in Goochland, said Deborah Cox, Virginia State Public Relations Office.

After recognizing the driver as Hewlett, they took him to the magistrate’s office in Goochland. Hewlett then escaped custody. The details of his escape have not been released.

“This is something that we’re looking into, “said Cox. “We want to make sure all policies were followed.”

The Virginia State Police, assisted by the Department of Corrections and the Goochland County Sheriff’s Office, along with aerial support and K-9 units, searched the area for several hours Monday evening.

The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Fugitive Apprehension Unit is now vigorously searching for Hewlett, said Cox.

According to police, Hewlett is a 6’4” black male weighing 210 lbs. He has a scar on his chin and right eye. He was last seen wearing a brown and white striped polo shirt with blue jeans and white sneakers. His last known address is in Highland Springs, Va..

He is wanted for felony eluding and evading of a law enforcement officer, DUI and escape.
