In response to swine flue concerns, Goochland County Public Schools is advising students, teachers and families to be aware of measures they can take to stay healthy.
Frequent hand washing is the most effective way to prevent the spread of any virus, said Research and Information Services Analyst Brad Franklin in a recent press release.
Students exhibing any symptoms related to swine flu should contact their family physician and their school nurse.
According to the Virgnia Department of Health (VDH) there have been no cases of swine flu virus in Virginia.
But in the event that the illness spreads further, GCPS is preparing a pandemic plan that will work in conjunction with the VDH and the Goochland County Health Department.
Those who have traveled to affected areas are urged to be especially aware of flu-like symptoms.
Those areas include Sand Diego County and Imperial County, California; Guadalupe County, Texas; and Mexico.
GCPS encourages those with flu-like illnesses to follow the following guidelines: staying home from school or work, and limiting contact with others to avoid infecting them; covering the nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing; washing hands often with soap and water, and using alcohol-based hand cleaners; avoiding close contact with sick people; and avoiding touching eyes, nose or mouth, so as not to spread germs.
