From Media General reports — A man died early yesterday after being shot in the vicinity of 14th and Hull streets, according to Richmond police. Officers patrolling that area yesterday heard gunshots and started searching the area. About 4:40 a.m., in the First block of East 14th Street, they found a male with gunshot wounds. The victim, identified as Darius Alphonzo Athey, 19, of the 2200 block of Chapel Hill Road in Goochland County, was taken to VCU Medical Center, where he later died. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
Athey was a student at Goochland High School. A memorial service at the high school is scheduled for Saturday, June 6, 1 p.m.
School spokesman Brad Franklin issued the following statement on behalf of the school system regarding the death:
“The students and staff at GCPS are shocked and saddened by what happened last weekend to one of our own. We will hold a memorial service at GHS at 1 p.m. Saturday to remember Darius and our thoughts and prayers continue to be with his family through what is such an enormously difficult time.”
