From Media General reports — A man died early yesterday after being shot in the vicinity of 14th and Hull streets, according to Richmond police. Officers patrolling that area yesterday heard gunshots and started searching the area. About 4:40 a.m., in the First block of East 14th Street, they found a male with gunshot wounds. The victim, identified as Darius Alphonzo Athey, 19, of the 2200 block of Chapel Hill Road in Goochland County, was taken to VCU Medical Center, where he later died. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.

Athey was a student at Goochland High School. A memorial service at the high school is scheduled for Saturday, June 6, 1 p.m.

School spokesman Brad Franklin issued the following statement on behalf of the school system regarding the death:

“The students and staff at GCPS are shocked and saddened by what happened last weekend to one of our own. We will hold a memorial service at GHS at 1 p.m. Saturday to remember Darius and our thoughts and prayers continue to be with his family through what is such an enormously difficult time.”

We thank you for your service Mr. Davis. There are some of us out here who really do appreciate the freedoms we have but I digress. What a shame these kids keep dying from violence before they have a chance at life.

LISA,
THIS WORLD IS FOR YOU. YOU JUST HAVE TO PUT FAITH IN GOD. I’VE HAD SOME ROUGH TIMES IN MY LIFE TOO. BUT TO WISH DEATH IS NOT SOMETHING YOU WANT. I’M IN AFGHANISTAN AND I CAN TELL YOU THAT I AM HERE TO ENSURE THAT YOU HAVE THE FREEDOM TO BE WHATEVER YOU WANT TO BE. THAT IS THE FREE WORL WAY. THEREFORE, SOMEONE HAS DIED FOR YOUR FREEDOM AND I ASK YOU TO LIVE THE DREAM. THAT DREAM IS WHAT EVER YOU WANT IT TO BE. WE ARE BLESSED EVEN WHEN ITS SEEMS LIKE NOTHING IS GOING OUR WAY.
