Goochland doctor’s license suspended
Published: April 07, 2010
by Ken Odor

The Virginia Board of Medicine has summarily suspended the license of Manakin-Sabot based family practitioner Dr. Ralph D. Hellams Jr.

The suspension, dated March 23 in a letter to Dr. Hellams, sets a hearing date of April 30 to hear evidence on allegations of unprofessional conduct.

Ina Statement of Particulars attached to the letter, Dr. Hellams is alleged to have entered into a romantic and sexual relationship in 2008 with a female patient whom he has served as primary care physician for approximately 11 years.

In addition, Dr. Hellams is alleged to have treated the patient’s husband after the initiation of the inappropriate relationship with the female patient, thus possibly adversely affecting his care.

A third allegation concerns the possible improper use of narcotics in the treatment of the female patient’s chronic back pain.

The Goochland Gazette has the right and the responsibility to inform the community of anything that happens in the community. The allegations brought against Dr. Hellams have not only hurt him and his family but the community in general. It’s the patients that are affected the most from the allegations brought against Dr. Hellams. The patients now must scramble to find another doctor just because they have a cold, or they need a refill on blood pressure medication, or that little Johnnie has to have a football physical. If the Board would have given Dr. Hellams notice ahead of time about the suspension the patients could have been warned or arrangements could have been made for a replacement. Instead they choose to act swiftly. However, I believe that the Board of Medicine acts to protect the public against all of those who might harm said public. Even if the charges are dropped upon further investigation. I have known Dr. Hellams for over 5 years. He is a good man, a good and caring papa, and a good American. He is also a firm believer in the Goochland community. For many years I have heard him speak highly of the community that has opened its arms and hearts to Dr. Hellams and his practice. I can only hope that this community will continue that support of this man who believes in the community that he serves.

As per the “Letters to the Editor” column, Dr. Hellams admitted he made a serious mistake. I was a patient of his, and would still continue to be once the Board of Medicine makes a decision on April 30th.

Sure, I am deeply saddened at his mistake that affects the lives of so many, including himself, and his family, I can’t change what happened. I can only recognize that personally, but more importantly professionally, decisions made regarding my health care needs from Dr. Hellams were never improper. Dr. Hellams was genuine, caring and empathetic to your medical needs.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family in this time of need.

Sincerely,
Cindy C. Matthews

Dr. Hellams has been my doctor for years.  I can not even contemplate the above allegations.  He has treated me for a chronic pain condition, among other issues, and has never once mentioned narcotics as a treatment option.  Instead, he has been a competent and thorough physician.  I am very sorry to see this in the news.

I have been a patient for more than 6 years. I have never seen him give medications incorrectly, and i certainly have never had problems personally. while i do not know the situation in full, I still feel like I would be safe under his care. If he is able to continue his practice I will continue to be a Patient.  I plan to stand by him. Don’t judge until you know the facts.

While I am sorry to see his name associated with any negative news, I believe the gazette simply stated the situation. The accuser is the one who has dragged his name through the mud (perhaps justifiably, but that remains to be seen).

Dr. Hellams has been my doctor since he opened his doors on Patterson Ave. He has always been kind, knowledgeable, and a prudent practitioner. I have never seen any indication of over prescribing, in fact I’ve experienced the opposite (which is fine by me).

As an American I believe that we have the right to be innocent until facts prove otherwise. The way the Gazette has presented the news on Dr. Hellams it appears you have condemned him before you know the whole story. I am very disappointed in the manner you have chosen to communicate your story.

There is always two sides to every story.

I hope the Gazette will give Dr. Hellams his “day in court” particularly since he is not allowed to discuss these ALLEGATIONS. A sorry situation to publish findings in this format.
