The end of the election is now only days away, but those last few hours might seem the longest.
The polls in Goochland County are, according to the county’s registrar Frances Ragland, likely to be packed.
Ragland expects that on Nov. 4, 90% of the county’s 15,158 registered voters will turn out to support their favorite candidates.
And when they do, she says, they need to have their I.D., and their patience, ready.
There will only be 38 voting machines available at the county’s eight polling locations, with an additional voting machine for the central absentee precinct.
Although last spring the Registrar’s Office asked the State’s Board of Elections for additional machines, this request, which also went to local representatives in the General Assembly, was not granted.
Early voting was also ruled out as an option to ease crowds at the polls.
The one strategy election officials permitted was to split the poll book in Manakin—historically the county’s busiest precinct—into three. Ragland says that the book is now divided into the following sections: A-G, H-O, and P-Z.
The best way for voters to get in and out of polls as quickly as possible is to know what to expect.
