Farmers’ Market kicks off painting contest

Fine art recently came to the Goochland Farmers Market at Grace Episcopal Church as part of a painting contest designed to capture the market’s atmosphere.

Ellen Cabell, a founding board member of the Center for Rural Culture, which sponsors the Market, had the idea for local artists to render their impressions of the lively Saturday morning event.

The invitations went out and some very accomplished artists showed up with their easels and equipment.

Dick Sage of Carriage Drive off Miller’s Lane is a retired senior partner in a prominent Richmond insurance agency, but his hobby is oil painting.

“I’m a member of the Jack Woodson Sketch Club,” Sage said. “We get together frequently for painting, learning and socializing. We do mostly pleinair painting.”

Pleinair painting means outside scenes.

Sage was accompanied by Bob Meacham of Henrico, his mentor in art.

Meacham is retired from Life of Virginia where he started as a graphic artist but completed his career in various executive assignments.

“I’ve been a full-time fine artist now for 18 years. I founded the sketch club 12 years ago and we’ve grown to 38 members. It’s named after the best illustrator in the Richmond area,” Meacham said.

The CRC will be showcasing other local artists throughout the summer. A gala in October will honor all the sponsors and participants in the Market and will include an auction of the artists’ paintings.

You can learn more about this and other Market happenings by contacting Kate Sarfaty, the CRC secretary, at 556-3344.
