Phyllis Harris Platt, 55, is Goochland County’s assistant registrar. She came to Goochland more than two decades ago.
Her family includes her husband, Larry, daughter Megan, and son Justin.
Though she hasn’t been working in the registrar’s office long, Platt says she enjoys what she does.
“Every day is an adventure,” she said with a smile.

Q: What’s your educational background?
A: I have a B.S. in mathematics education from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Q: What’s your occupation and how long have you been doing it?
A: I have been working as the assistant registrar for a little more than nine months.

Q: If you weren’t doing this job, what would you like to do?
A: If I wasn’t doing this, I’d probably be working as a florist.

Q: What are your favorite and least favorite parts of your job?
A: My favorite part of my job is meeting all of the different kinds of people I see on a daily basis. My least favorite part of my job is having to tell a losing candidate the results of an election.

Q: What’s your idea of a perfect day off?
A: It depends on the season. In warm weather, I’d like to be sitting on the porch with my husband reading a book and drinking iced coffee.  In cold weather, I’d like to be sitting near the fire place or wood stove with my husband reading a book and drinking hot coffee.

Q: What’s your most treasured possesion?
A: My family ring, given to me by my husband for Christmas in 1993.  The ring has the birthstones of all the members of my family; and each time I look at it, I remember how lucky I am.

Q: What are your hobbies or interests?
A: I enjoy flower arranging, reading, sewing, walking, and anything to do with Christmas.

Q: How long have you lived in Goochland?
A: I have lived in Goochland for more than 22 years.  We moved here because my husband used to live in Goochland and we liked the area.

Q: How would you describe Goochland County to a stranger?
A: I would say it has beautiful scenery and friendly people. It’s a rural area transitioning to a more suburban area.

Q: What would you change about this county if you could?
A: If I could change anything, I’d move it closer to Jacksonville, Fla. where my daughter and son-in-law live.

Q: What is/are the best thing(s) about Goochland?
A: To me, the best things about Goochland are first and foremost the people. And beyond the people, it’s a great place because you can get to the mountains or the beach in just a few hours.
