Last Sunday about 90 people, including officers and role players, participated in a simulated shooter drill on the western campus of J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College Sunday.

The training exercise included JSRCC’s Police and Security Services Department, the Virginia State Police, the Goochland County Sheriff’s Office, the Goochland Volunteer Fire-Rescue Association and volunteer participants.

“One of my primary goals was to build relationships with Goochland County and the State Police, and I believe we accomplished that mission,” said Chief Garth Wheeler of JSRCC’s Campus Police. “We were pleased with the response, and with everybody’s dedication to this.”

I believe more colleges should be training their staff for these kinds of situations. I know this type of training doesn’t happen enough. Hopefully there will never be a need to use it.
