Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli told the Goochland Tea Party Monday night that the fall election is the most important one they will ever live through.
“This administration shows a disdain for the rule of law never seen before,” said Cuccinelli of the Obama administration. He urged the approximately 120 people present to get to work to “beat this president for the sake of the country.”
Cuccinelli, who is seeking the GOP nomination for governor in the 2013 election, was the keynote speaker at the meeting held at Goochland High School.
Earlier in the evening, the party endorsed Tea Party organizer Jaime Radtke in her bid for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate. She faces an uphill battle against former Sen. George Allen in her bid to run against former Democratic governor Tim Kaine this fall.
Goochland Tea Party Chairman Keith Flannagan said Thursday Radkte’s endorsement by the executive committee was unanimous.
In his talk Cuccinelli reviewed the prospects of his lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the Obama administration’s controversial health care law, which requires individuals to purchase health care insurance or else pay a penalty.
“We’re asking them to rip the whole thing out by the roots,” said Cuccinelli.
He also attacked the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which he dubbed the “Employment Prevention Agency” because of what he characterized as job-killing regulations.
Taking questions, Cuccinelli gave 50-50 odds on Virginia going for Obama again, calling the Commonwealth “emblematic of the swing states” that will decide the election.
Later in the week, Flannagan said the Tea Party was still a force in national politics, despite attention being drawn to the “Occupy” movement more recently.
“We have a lot in common with the Occupy people,” said Flannagan, “we just come at it from different angles.”
Flannagan told the crowd Monday night that the local Tea Party had great success in the fall local elections.
“We had 13 endorsements and 13 wins,” he said. Those included two members of the party’s executive committee, Susan Lascolette, who defeated long term incumbent Andrew Pryor for the District 1 Goochland Board of Supervisors’ seat and John L. Lumpkins Jr., who beat incumbent Ivan O. Mattox Sr. in the contest for the District 3 seat on the county school board.
The Goochland Tea Party will meet again near the end of the school year, said Flannagan and invite the Goochland Board of Supervisors to attend.
