New: Read the Animal Control investigation notes
A Hadensville woman will face two misdemeanor charges of animal neglect in Goochland District Court on April 12.
Annette Thompson operates the Pet Rescue Foundation in Hadensville.
Two warrants were sworn out last week against Thompson, one alleging animal cruelty, a class 1 misdemeanor, in the death of a horse last year at the foundation and one alleging animal neglect, a class 4 misdemeanor.
In a preliminary hearing on Monday, March 8 before Judge Edward Carpenter, the more serious charge involving the death of the horse was amended to a class 4 misdemeanor.
Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Nancy Oglesby said there was not enough evidence to support the more serious charge of animal cruelty.
Maximum penalty for a class 4 misdemeanor is a $250 fine.
According to Oglesby, Goochland Animal Control inspected the facility last week and found no current violations.

Annette, I know that you’re probably reading these comments and I hope that you realize that finally you need help. Please let rescuers aid you. They have your best interests at heart & do not want to cause you grief. I’m sure that you’re scared and lonely with all these people attacking you. Please don’t worry that your animals won’t be taken care of. I can promise you that they will be vetted properly & be given good homes. Think about it. Contact people that you trust.

I have always wondered where is this woman’s family, why is this old lady way out here all by herself with all these animals???? Is she married? Does she have kids? I’m sure they’re not in the picture and her relationship with them (or lack of one in this case) is a HUGE contributor to her hoarding condition. Something is obviously extremely wrong with her emotionally which is why she hoards. She’s trying to fill an emotional void (lack of love)by holding onto stuff, which sadly in this case are living animals. Annette needs to realize that storing stuff (the animals) only brings misery, chaos, and isolation and that she will never have peace and balance in her life until she takes steps to overcome her compulsive hoarding. Her internal emotional clutter has manifested itself as EXTERNAL clutter (too many damn animals for one person to even possibly begin to properly care for!!!) Another reason I know she’s a hoarder is because the day I volunteered she told me, “I don’t want to do this anymore, I’m getting too old for this, but I CAN’T SAY NO!!!!” And she told me she can’t remember anything, and she went to her doctor and he told her she has too much going on in her life, she has too much on her plate. Isn’t this a wonderful situation? The old lady who can’t remember anything is the sole provider for hundreds of animals!!! Unbelievable! The innocent animals deserve better!
I just had to post this article I found. An absolutely perfect description of Annette!
Hoarders frequently see the rescued animals as surrogate children or love substitutes. They form unhealthy emotional attachments to the animals and have an abnormal need to control this aspect, and even after animals are confiscated, many hoarders resume their activities. Little is known about the psychological problem of hoarding, as it just recently became a recognized mental disorder.
In a review of hoarding cases published by Tufts University, hoarders are predominately female. Nearly three-quarters are single, divorced or widowed and over half live alone. Almost half are 60 years of age or older, and in 80% of the cases, animals were found dead or with severe medical problems. In three-quarters of the cases animals were overcrowded and in unsanitary conditions.
Some warning signs of hoarding behavior are the following:
The inability to refuse a “needy” animal, despite having too many at home.
A refusal to stop rescuing despite a lack of money or space.
The unwillingness to adopt the “rescued” animal to a good home, and finding excuses to reject those who do want to adopt.
An inability to care for the animals, physically and emotionally.
Having mistaken beliefs about the hoarded animals’ needs and about shelters or other alternatives.
Avoiding behavior that would expose the hoarder, such as inviting guests to the home.
Unsanitary conditions for the animals and the hoarder (frequently hoarders have extremely dirty homes that include the presence of animal wastes).
The difference between a rescuer and a hoarder is that those who rescue know their limits. Rescuers understand that they have to turn away animals they do not have the space, time, or money to care for.
If she has such a reputable establishment, don’t you think it’s a little strange that she wouldn’t allow the camera crew on her property?

you all sit here and point fingers and fight with each other , why do you all do something about it? like why do each one of you go adopt one aminal from her and give her 50lb bag of food to help out? there are so many thing that can be done to help but NO you all just want to fight and carry on ... if you are not part of the solution then you are part of the problem.
i would be more then happy to take a 50lb of dog food to her and clean up the areas for the animals .. so who with me on this ?

Just because she cares enough about animals to hoard them doesn’t mean she takes care of them! Listen to what people are saying, they don’t make this stuff up!!

I think the focus of this discussion has plummeted greatly, hunting is not the issue the neglect and abuse on animals is the focus. Its very interesting to read the postings. I am glad we can share our views, i am better educated and can understand some what why Goochland is turning a blind eye. Most of the people they do business with, there family, friends and elected officials feel like they are a tight nit community and have to protect Goochland from us City Folk. No need to be defensive we are doing this to expose those who are neglecting the animals and abusing them.

Obviously Rick Jarrell is someone to be ignored. I guess he thinks his graphic description of killing and boiling a chicken is going to shock us all. Want to be shocked Rick? Go to Ms. Thompson’s property and take a look at the animals. Being in rescue, nothing shocks us, so don’t waste your time. People, ignore him, don’t respond. He gets his jollie’s when we do. One more thing though, if you think a dog should live outside 24/7, why don’t you try it, you cold hearted little man? This is my last response to his idiotic comments, because I can’t waste my time and energy on a mental midget.

State Veterinarian Inspectors (804)786-2483 found violations at Ms. Thompson’s property beginning in 2005 and most recently in 2009:
1. An “emaciated” horse in need of “a complete veterinary exam including diagnostic tests”
2.“A geriatric dog appeared to be in need of veterinary treatment. Euthanasia or other veterinary treatment is recommended.”
3. A dog on a very short chain: We “recommend an alternative management practice for this animal.”
4. Water in “2 1/2 gal. or larger receptacles was completely frozen solid.”
5. “Runs had more than 10 piles of feces indicating that cleaning is not performed at sufficient intervals.”
6. “Some of the dog houses are not insulated or even thick walled.”
7. “No bedding is provided - temperatures had dropped to below 20 degrees the previous night. Therefore shelter was not adequate.”
8. Need to “protect animals from weather extremes with insulated shelter or bedding, smaller openings to the dog houses, supplemental heat or indoor housing for below-freezing temperatures and special needs related to age, compromised health, hair coat, etc.”
9. “There are approximately 103 dogs under her care.”
10: “I informed Ms. Thompson that animals must have access to fresh, drinkable water and that the enclosures must be kept sanitary…”
11. “She has overextended herself beyond her means and ability.”

rick jarrell, dogs are not meant to be left outside 24/7 in the freezing weather, snow and burning up in the summer, are you some kind of idiot. when i have visited goochland i see so
many dogs running around not spayed and neutered
i guess you do not believe in that either.
dogs are a part of the family, they are not meant
to be tied up to a tree stuck outside all day
nowhere to go cannot run and play. i suggest
you keep your comments to yourself you are sounding really pathetic. this is about people
trying to help those animals, dogs, horses, sheep,
chickens, cats, kittens and many more at this
rescue. give me a break this is unfair for the
animals and shame on goochland closing their eyes
to this for so long, obviously animals do not
count in goochland, i have also heard how bad
some hunters treat their dogs in goochland to
dumping them because they cannot hunt, shooting
them in the head, nice treatment Goochland.

I would just ignore Rick Jarrell’s comments at this point people. It’s quite obvious he’s completely clueless & ignorant of the situation at Annette’s & is just trying to get a rise out of people who truly care about the animals & are desperately trying to fix the problem. I actually thought you would at least bring up some valid thoughtful points since you seem to be the only one pro Pet Rescue Foundation.
