As they say, sometimes a little cooperation can go a long way. And for motorists and travelers on Va. Route 623 in Goochland, that is definitely true.
A partnership between business neighbors Luck Stone and 623 Landfill has made a potentially tough situation considerably better.

623 Landfill, a Republic Services, Inc. facility, contracted with Luck Stone for the drainage stone required for a new disposal cell.

And the two companies, realizing what the project would mean for Route 623, came together on a plan to share a boundary between the two properties.

“In building the new cell, we knew we would have a lot of drainage stone,” said Mark Bingham with 623 Landfill. “We were going to have 40 tons of it to move.”
Fortunately, Luck Stone is right next door, he said.

“And so in an effort to mitigate some of the traffic congestion that 623 sees, we came together on a way to access things and keep the road clear,” Bingham added.

The access eliminates about 7,000 truck trips during the construction project. That’s roughly 150 trips per day.

And the use of larger off-road dump trucks saves money as well, considering increasing fuel costs.

“Good citizenship is the foundation of a successful community,” said Doris Elderman, executive director of the Goochland County Chamber of Commerce. “These two corporate citizens took a moment to think about what impact their project might have on others and created a solution.”

Elderman said this kind of thoughtfulness and cooperation among neighbors is “what makes Goochland the great community it is.”

She added that both operations strive to be good neighbors and besides reducing truck trips and emissions, both Luck Stone and 623 Landfill educate drivers, who are not their employees, about community concerns and expectations for courteous operation.

“That’s why the Chamber of Commerce chose to recognize Luck Stone and 623 Landfill for their efforts at our May board meeting,” she said.

District 4 Supervisor Rudy Butler said, “Luck Stone and 623 Landfill provide essential products and services that are vital to Goochland. The fact that they do so while always striving to be good citizens and neighbors makes them a model for all other businesses and residents of our community.”
