Firefighters were called to a barn fire in Manakin just after 10 a.m. this morning, says Goochland County Fire Chief William MacKay.

The fire occurred in the 1400 block of Manakin road and destroyed a 3,000 square-foot barn.

The fire chief said smoke was visible from Oilville, which is about 6 miles away from the fire scene.

MacKay said that about 12 firefighting units, and multiple tankers from Goochland and Hanover Counties, were called in to help fight the blaze.
. “The barn was a total loss,” said MacKay, adding that an estimated damage cost isn’t yet available.  Firefighters were able to contain the fire and no other buildings were affected.

Sergeant T. J. Molnar of the Virginia State Police, which was called to the scene by the Goochland Fire Department, said the fire started in the barn’s hay loft.

Most firefighters had left the fire scene by 2:00 p.m. said MacKay, but as of 5:00 p.m. some workers were still there.

Although one 911 call reported that there were horses trapped within the barn, by the time firefighters arrived all animals had been evacuated from the building.  The barn has been used as a boarding facility and authorities are currently working to determine the exact owners of the property and the horses it housed.

“Despite the extreme temperatures, we didn’t sustain any injuries,” said MacKay of the firefighters.

Virginia State Police are still investigating the cause of the fire, but the fire chief doesn’t suspect foul play.

“Nothing indicates anything but an accidental fire at this time,” said MacKay.
