Cantor handily wins re-election
By Tyler Whitley, Media General News Service

BY TYLER WHITLEY

Running as a Republican leader who wants to rein in government spending, Rep. Eric I. Cantor, R-7th, had another easy re-election victory Tuesday in one of the most Republican-leaning congressional districts in the country.

Democrat Anita Hartke of Culpeper County could never raise the money to mount an effective challenge to Cantor in the sprawling district, which stretches from the West End of Richmond, through suburban Chesterfield and Hanover counties, all the way west to Page County across the Blue Ridge Mountains.

By ignoring Hartke, Cantor never gave her a forum to make herself known.

The daughter of a former Indiana senator, Vance Hartke, who once ran for president, Hartke presented…

Rousing ourselves to vote
.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Election day dawned as gray and rainy, exactly the kind of morning designed for hitting the snooze button and pulling up the quilt.

But across Goochland voters resisted the seductive comfort of their beds. They threw off the covers and braved the weather, ready to cast their vote for the candidate of their choice.

After months of divisiveness, people are gathering to stand in line, side by side.

And although they may be voting for different men, they are voting for the same purpose—to have their voice heard, to have the opportunity to influence the fate of our nation.

However this turns out, there will be a precedent set—either the first black president, or the first female vice president, wil be heading…

Voter turnout heavy in Goochland
By Ken Odor

Goochland County appeared headed for a possible record voter turnout Tuesday as citizens lined up in the rain before the polls opened.

“We had at least 50 people standing in line and it had already started to drizzle,” said poll worker Linda Thurston at Fife Precinct in western Goochland County.

“It’s the first time we’ve seen anything like it,” said Fife’s Chief Poll Worker Veena Brown. “They were lined up all down the driveway.”

By 10 a.m. 470 votes had already been cast out of 1183 registered voters at Fife.

Woody Barrack told a similar story at Sandy Hook Precinct. “We did close to 500 in the first two hours,” said Barrack. “They were lined…

Mock election gives Obama close victory
Ken Odor

Goochland Middle School students gave the nod to Democratic candidate Barack Obama for president in a mock election Monday, one day ahead of the general election.

The Obama/Biden ticket edged out Republicans McCain/Palin by 20 votes, 262 to 242.

Former Democratic governor Mark Warner beat former Republican governor Jim Gilmore handily, 289 to 190, for the open U. S. Senate seat held by retiring Republican John Warner.

But Republican congressman Eric Cantor held off challenger Anita Hartke, 317 to 206, preventing a clean sweep by Democrats in the mock election.

“We’re too young to vote now, but it’s a little bit of a taste of what’s to come,” said seventh grader Katie Zohab (12), who…

ABSENTEE VOTING SURPASSES TOTAL ABSENTEE BALLOTS CAST IN 2004
Virginia continues to break records, as the number of Virginians voting absentee surpasses the total number of absentee ballots cast in the 2004 presidential election.

For this year’s election, as of November 3, there have been 538,130 absentee ballot applications approved and 465,962 absentee ballots processed.  Over 300,000 Virginians voted in person absentee.  In 2004, a total of 222,059 absentee ballots were cast.

With more than 5 million voters registered and about 10% of them voting absentee, Virginia is still gearing up for a busy Election Day.  Unlike neighboring states, since November 2007 Virginia has conducted seven elections,…

Getting out the vote in Goochland County
BY AMY CONDRA
.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

The end of the election is now only days away, but those last few hours might seem the longest.

The polls in Goochland County are, according to the county’s registrar Frances Ragland, likely to be packed.

Ragland expects that on Nov. 4, 90% of the county’s 15,158 registered voters will turn out to support their favorite candidates.

And when they do, she says, they need to have their I.D., and their patience, ready.

There will only be 38 voting machines available at the county’s eight polling locations, with an additional voting machine for the central absentee precinct.

Although last spring the Registrar’s Office asked the State’s Board of Elections for additional machines,…

Wrapping up the election
Amy Condra

Can there possibly be anything left to say about this election, that hasn’t been said? (Again, and again, and again…)

Lately I’ve been telling people that I can’t wait for it to be over. But I suspect that I may be in for a letdown—what on earth am I going to talk about, or gee, even think about, once there are no more splashy election stories?

Will I miss the nightly recaps in the news and in conversations, as many of us gather to deconstruct our favorite moments from each campaign’s daily bump and grind? Will anything seem as poignant as my favorite candidate’s words of soaring inspiration, or as funny as his opponent’s face-flattening misstep?

I think it’s time…

Choosing a side
Amy Condra

As the election winds down to its final hour, most of us are keeping our eyes on the clock.

According to Nielsen Media Research, more than three in five American households watched one or both of the vice-presidential and presidential debates.

Another presidential debate was scheduled for the evening this paper went to press. Political spinners have been weaving words in newspaper columns, television sound bites and Web site blogs, predicting that the stakes are especially high for candidate McCain as Obama pulls ahead in the polls.

Before the debacles that occurred on Wall Street, and the fear that ensued in Congress and among voters, McCain and Obama were running a close race.

Since then our country’s…

Freedom Fund Banquet focuses on upcoming presidential election
BY KEN ODOR
.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

The Goochland County branch of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) held its annual dinner last weekend.

And, at the event, members of the organization noted that the presidential election is just weeks away.

“We are living in historic times,” keynote speaker Gwen Williams, an anchorwoman with television station WRIC, told the dinner guests. Williams pointed out that history would be made, either with the first female vice president being picked, or the first African-American candidate winning the nation’s highest office.

More than 400 members and guests attended the banquet, held at Quioccasin Baptist Church in Henrico.

While emphasis was placed on the upcoming…

Registrar asking for help, patience
BY BRAD FRANKLIN
.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

If a major voting problem can happen in Chesterfield County during a primary, some are wondering what there is to stop one from popping up in Goochland in November’s presidential election.

That’s the question that has the county’s registrar, Frances Ragland, both worried and straight-to-the-point.

“We’re going to have lines,” she said of the election this fall. “There’s no other way to say it. People are going to have to wait. And we’re going to do everything we can, with what we have to work with, to make things run as well as possible.”

Ragland’s hands are somewhat tied when it comes to the Nov. 4 election. Because of legislation passed by the General…

Obama, McCain take state, county primaries
BY BRAD FRANKLIN
.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

If Tuesday was a preview, then consider the voters of Goochland behind Democrat Barack Obama’s bid to be the next president of the United States.

During Tuesday’s primary, the first-term U.S. Senator from Illinois scored a big win in the Commonwealth, besting opponent Sen. Hillary Clinton by almost 30 points.

Locally, Obama’s win was even bigger. He carried Goochland County with ease, taking 68.56 percent of the votes cast (2,026) and bested Clinton by 38 points.
The former First Lady, by contrast, received 30.45 percent or 900 votes locally.

The other 29 votes in the primary were spread through four other candidates.

On the Republican side, Arizona’s Sen. John McCain continued his…
